Father of aerobics speaks tonight at Simmons Center

Posted: at 2:48 pm

DUNCAN Dr. Kenneth Coopers name may not known everywhere, but most folks have heard of the excercise phenomenon he created -- aerobics.

Cooper, the founder of aerobics, will speak to Duncan area residents at 7 p.m. today at the Simmons Center Theatre. Coopers program is titled Exercise Is Medicine. Coopers visit is part of the Duncan Regional Hospitals Health Week.

More than 40 years have passed since Cooper released his book Aerobics, which was aimed at encouraging people to exercise. There is no charge for Coopers talk, which will focus on revolutionizing health and fitness.

He is the creator of aerobics; he will talk about how you need to take care of yourself, Cyndi Crook, Duncan Regional Hospital Health Foundation director, said.

Crook said Cooper is well-known in his field and around the world. The Cooper Clinic, which has been a fixture in Dallas for the last 45 years, focuses on helping people prevent disease and promote healthy lifestyles.

For the DRH Health Foundation, the Cooper Clinics goals fall in line with those of the Health Foundation.

The goal of the hospital and the foundation is to provide information on how to have a healthy life, Crook said. He will provide some great information.

Cooper isnt the only attraction for this years Health Week. The week officially kicked off with the annual Give It a Tri Triathlon on Sunday.

At 8 a.m. today, Meridan Zerner, registered dietitian for the Cooper Clinic, will teach beginner Pilates. Zerner will also be the guest speaker for the ninth annual Ladies Luncheon, which will be from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Simmons Center.

For information about Health Week, call the DRH Health Foundation at 580-251-8211.

City of Duncan to temporarily change water disinfectants

Posted: at 2:48 pm

DUNCAN The City of Duncan will be changing its disinfectant at the Water Distribution System from chloramines to free chlorine for about 30 days.

The month-long change is aimed at decreasing nitrogen build-up, which could allow the growth of bacteria in the water, prompting the change in disinfectants annually, Duncan Public Works Director Scott Vaughn said.

Chloramines are weaker than free chlorine, Vaughn said. But chloramines are more stable.

By changing disinfectants, the city is able to purge the system, Vaughn said, which eliminates the potential for nitrogen to be released.

The goal is maintain safe drinking water, he said.

The appearance, taste and smell of the water may change during the 30-day cycle, but Vaughn said it will be safe to drink or use for other purposes, including bathing and washing clothes and dishes.

We used to only use free chlorine, he said. You can think of it as were temporarily going back to the way we used to do it.

In addition to changing disinfectants, the city also will be flushing fire hydrants. Vaughn said the flushing process will start on the extremities of the water system.

The water system is designed to flow east to west. That will be taken into consideration when the city begins the flushing process.

Zerner talks nutrition during Ladies Luncheon

Posted: at 2:48 pm

without comments

DUNCAN When it comes to living a healthier lifestyle, dietitian Meridan Zerner said a few small changes could make all the difference for the long term.

Zerner, who is employed by the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, was the guest speaker Tuesday for the Duncan Regional Hospital Health Foundations annual Ladies Luncheon at the Simmons Center. About 270 people were in attendance.

I feel so honored and privileged, Zerner said prior to the program. Any opportunity I get to share healthy living, I find it invaluable.

Earlier in the day, Zerner led a Pilates class of about 25 people at the Simmons Center.

For Zerner, that class was only the first move toward healthier living. She said, aside from exercise, nutrition plays a sizable role.

During the Ladies Luncheon, she talked about the importance of proper nutrition, including proper portion sizes. She said, nutrition makes up one-third of a healthy lifestyle. The other two-thirds includes exercise and sleep/stress management.

Zerner recommended eating smaller meals throughout the day, which would equate to about five meals, instead of one or two larger meals. Much of the food people should be eating should be fruits and vegetables.

Eat more color, more plant-based foods, she said.

She also spoke about the benefit of carbohydrates, which are detrimental to the brain, nervous system and muscles.

She said the benefit of carbohydrates and proteins are lost when people eat too many at once, instead of sticking to portion sizes.

Marlow makeover nears completion

Posted: at 2:48 pm

MARLOW Parking in downtown Marlow was cordoned off on Monday to allow workers to peel up about an inch of asphalt from downtown streets for later repaving.

The work will continue today and possibly on Wednesday, said Marlow Administrator Jason McPherson, but shoppers, residents and merchants took the inconvenience in stride, possibly because they recognize the citys downtown makeover is nearing completion.

Im impressed with the understanding of our community, McPherson said.

Already in place are new sidewalks, curbs and gutters along with new streetlights and trees.

The new sidewalks replace cracked and crumbling sidewalks that in some cases were about 80 years old, McPherson said.

There were sidewalks before there were roads in this town, he said. This is really an improvement... These sidewalks will last long past my lifetime.

The asphalt work that began Monday will even up the street with the newly installed gutters, McPherson said, but workers will have to wait until temperatures reach at least 50 degrees over a sustained time period before new asphalt can be spread.

The work is part of a $1.145 million makeover of downtown Marlow.

The city is paying 55 percent of the cost while a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation funds the remainder.

When the street work is finished, Marlow will hold a grand opening cermony to formally unveil its new downtown, McPherson said.
