Veterinarians, public safety responders rehearse animal disease outbreak in Cache County

WELLSVILLE It almost looked like scenes out of a movie.
Throughout Cache Valley this week, livestock-hauling trucks were stopped for inspection at the state border. Veterinarians in biosecurity moon suits examined animals. A command center was established where the states chief veterinarian and Homeland Security officials received briefings.
While it wasnt a rehearsal for the next major medical thriller film, it was a rehearsal for something much more: The containment of the next foreign animal disease (FAD) to hit Cache Valley or the state of Utah.
Veterinarians and public safety responders from Utah and Idaho came together at the Caine Dairy Teaching and Research Center over three days to conduct a large-scale FAD exercise, sponsored by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
The exercise, from July 31 through Aug. 2, included classroom training on topics of biosecurity on the farm, strengthening community agro-security planning, livestock inspection, pathogenic control and more.
It was the first time the UDAF has actually staged such an exercise. The UDAF reviews its procedures at formal meetings every year.
If you think about a disease outbreak coming to Cache Valley, and if we were only to contain it to Cache Valley, and it didnt go anywhere else, (the FAD) would still have devastating effects, said Bruce King, Utahs chief veterinarian, during a media briefing during the exercise Wednesday. Id predict 24 hours later, before we can even get our arms around this disease, probably most of the dairies in Cache Valley would be infected ... because of all of the (interaction) between agriculture we have today in a worldwide farming industry.
Foreign animal diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow) and foot-and-mouth-disease can damage consumer confidence in the vibrant U.S. food supply market. Officials say the combined value of both states livestock revenue tops $4 billion $3.2 billion for Idaho and $1 billion for Utah.
A FAD can also lead to costly trade embargoes by foreign countries, King said.
Its a disease that scares us in this business because if we diagnose it in the United States, no matter where it happens, we could automatically lose all of the export market, King said of foot-and-mouth disease. The price of meat, the price of milk would all go in the crapper, for lack of a better term.

Bradley camp lets high school students improve forensic skills
Posted: July 28, 2012 at 9:16 am
According to a Gallup survey, speaking in front of an audience is No. 2 among Americans' greatest fears.
Just below snakes.
But the most fearful part of Danny Takeuchi's experience with the Bradley University Summer Forensics Institute might have come before his arrival two weeks ago.
The 14-year-old traveled alone by airplane from his home in Boise, Idaho, to Peoria to attend the institute, a speech camp intended for high school students. Takeuchi won't begin high school for a few more weeks.
"I guess it's kind of a head start," Takeuchi said Friday at Bradley's Global Communications Center, the hub of the camp.
Takeuchi's itinerary took him from Boise to Denver to Chicago to Peoria. He gave Peoria a better grade than he did Austin, Texas, where he participated in a camp earlier this summer. That time, his mother accompanied him.
"It's certainly cooler than Texas, even if it's in the 100s still," Takeuchi said.
It wasn't quite that warm Friday, but it was a little toasty for dark suits and evening dresses. That's what most of the 100 campers wore as they prepared to present programs in small groups all over the Global Communications Center.
The camp culminates this weekend. More performances are scheduled Saturday in three genres of forensics - public address, in which students write, research and deliver their own speech; interpretation of other authors' works, including poetry; and limited preparation, an off-the-cuff talk that usually is about current events.
According to co-director Michael Chen, the institute isn't a competition. It's more a celebration of talent, albeit not an easy one.

LA’s Gonzalez feeling strong, could make return in late July
Posted: July 3, 2012 at 9:11 pm
CARSON, Calif. The LA Galaxy's Monday session barely qualified as a game.
The Galaxy fielded what was essentially their reserve side in a scrimmage against a squad full of their own academy players. No stats were kept and the excercise was over after 45 minutes.
It was, however, quite significant for one player on the field, as Omar Gonzalez played for the Galaxy in his first competitive setting since tearing ligaments in his left knee this past winter. The 2011 MLS Defender of the Year played the entire session running, sprinting, making runs and sliding into position when necessary.
The match was one of many tests hes had during his rehabilitation process, and Gonzalez gave himself a passing mark after the most recent sign of progress.
Today was just to see how I am and how my fitness was coming along, he told reporters. I got a little bit tired towards the end, and were playing against our Academy, so I didnt have to get up for a lot of headers or do a lot of defending. For the most part, I think I did well, but I wasnt really tested.
Gonzalez returned to full training more than two weeks ago, and while he has made significant progress during that time, a potential return date is not set in stone just yet. He didn't shy away from sharing his own goal, though.

It is a moving target. We still dont know yet, Gonzalez said. At the end of this month or early next month is my goal. But you never know, maybe Ill surprise you guys.
Instead of 2012 being a memorable step into the upper echelon of American center backs, Gonzalezs year got off to a gloomy beginning. After moving to FC Nrnberg on a short-term loan with hopes of making an impression on the German club, Gonzalez tore a ligament in his left knee during his first training session with the club in January.
His original prognosis had him set to miss seven to nine months. Should Gonzalez return by the end of July, hell have been out just shy of seven months. Already, the signs are encouraging.
