How I Make A Living As A Writer (And You Can Too)
Posted: at 2:45 pm
When I first wrote a novel in 1991, I remember walking down the road and seeing a pretty girl and thinking She might like me now. I know that a lot of what I write seems to involve whether or not women like me. But thats what I think about. I want people to like me. And, when I was younger, it was more important that women like me than that men like me.
This post originally appeared on The Altucher Confidential.
I also wanted money. I didnt want to work for a boss. That scary feeling of being called into the bosss office after you know you did something that was wrong. I put it in quotes because what does it matter now? What did it even matter then? How could you, my sweet baby, ever do something wrong? (Note: thats the sentence I would whisper to myself after being summoned to the bosss office.)
Dont you have any pride in your work?
Clean out your desk today.
Did you steal all of the paper?
Why did the office cleaning lady find 20 moldy sandwiches in your drawer?
Why didnt you test the software before it went to the client?
Whatever. Its because I was busy and no, I didnt have pride in my work. I was 22 years old and looking at women and trying to publish a novel on the side so I didnt have to work anymore. And I have no comment about the sandwiches. It took many years before I made any money as a writer. And what works then is different now. Right now its easier than ever. But the rules changed every three or four years and they will change again. Just like they change with everything in life.
By the way, that first novel, and the four that came after it, and the 50 short stories that came after it, never got published. I used to think I needed to publish something before I could feel good about myself, before I could call myself a writer, before I could have a girlfriend, before I could get a real job, before I could move to NYC. What a pathetic weight on my shoulder to think I needed something controlled by just a handful of people. Those weights stayed on my back for years.

Why relationships go wrong
Posted: February 16, 2014 at 5:48 am
Many so-called beautiful relationships go wrong and a lot of people dismiss them as irreconcilable differences. Some get so hurt they swear not to go into another relationship ever again. Others immediately jump into another relationship, hoping this time it would be better.
How does one avoid such circumstances? Here are a few pointers that have worked for many. I trust that they would work for you as well.
Getting along with you
First and foremost, you must develop a relationship with yourself. You have to be able to get along with you. When you are so discombobulated within your self, please, please, it isnt the right time to get into a relationship thinking that it is what will settle your within and bring you joy.
I guarantee you its not going to happen. You cant even relate to yourself harmoniously, how will you now relate to another human being who just might be as confused as yourself? Please be reminded that we do attract like-minds.
Yes, there is chemistry, yes there is attraction, but they are not a guarantee for a happy relationship. Sure, the sex is great, but what happens after that?
Do you really like you? Can you be alone with yourself, or do you always have to have people around you? If not, do you have a blaring radio or television on? Let me repeat, what is your relationship with yourself really like?
Pain-body
Your state of mind is also just as important. The number of people you havent forgiven matters. And that includes having forgiven yourself for all the so-called mistakes you have made. Be aware that all these you are bringing to the relationship you have decided to enter.
Secondly, you must consider the pain-body of the person you are about to share your life with. Pain-body is defined by Eckhart Tolle as the body of pain that we have built in our consciousness from the time we were conceived. Take into account what your mother was going through when you were in her womband after you were born, add all the pain you went through physically, mentally and emotionally.

Take Control of Your Own Narrative, Part 2
Posted: February 13, 2014 at 1:45 pm
By Anthony Meindl | Posted Feb. 13, 2014, 10 a.m.
Last week I discussed changing our narrativessimply the negative stories we most often tell about ourselves that no longer serve us.
When we make an investment in something, we are hoping to receive a benefit at some point in the future. What if we made an investment in telling a new story? Because it will pay off in the long run.
The stories we want to invest in are often the stories we tell about othersHes so talented, Shes so beautiful, They have something I dont have.
But we never use these stories to describe ourselves. Its true. When was the last time you woke up in the morning and said to yourself, Im wonderful?
The more we tell our habituated stories, the more we disconnect from the energetic potential of who we are.
We dont really tap into the resources of energy that are available to us, because that potential is distorted by the way we view ourselves. Its like looking into a clear body of water but what is reflected back to us is murky and clouded because of the left brain narratives we tell.
Paramahansa Yogananda, a guru and spiritual teacher who came to America from India in the 1920s said, Incredible amounts of energy are hidden in your brain; enough in a gram of flesh to run the city of Chicago for two days. And you say you are tired?
Thats a lot of energy.
Now mind you he was discussing Chicago some 80 years ago, but even if we adjusted for the energy demands and outputs of what a city of that size is generating todayif my numbers are correctwed still have enough energy to light up the Windy City for 7.3 hours!
