Clinton Laments Tech-Induced Limited Attention Spans
Posted: October 15, 2014 at 7:48 am
Hillary Clintonhas been working hard to court Silicon Valley, but like many people, shes troubled by our harried, hyper-connected world.
During a keynote speech on Tuesday that was largely about philanthropy and efforts to encourage children to read, she talked about how the U.S. was becoming more politically divided. Americans have become less racist, sexist, and homophobic than ever, she said, but when it comes to politics, they dont want to talk to people who disagree with them. The technological climate has only made that worse, she said onstage at Dreamforce, an annual conference sponsored by Salesforce.com.
We have technological changes that have imposed an almost impulsive reactive challenge to decision-making, she said.
Clinton said that it was becoming harder to build relationships political and otherwise in an age of limited attention spans. (She declined to answer a question about her own political ambitions.)
Dreamforce is a sprawling summit that shuts down San Franciscos downtown. In addition to Clinton, the conference featured well-known speakers, including spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle and a benefit concert by singer Bruno Mars.
Clinton in her keynote touted her project Too Small to Fail, launched earlier this year through the Clinton Global Initiative. The effort encourages parents to read, talk, and sing to their infants to close the word gap between wealthy and affluent children. UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Oakland, named for Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff, is a partner in the effort.
Mr. Benioff donated $25,000 to Clintons SuperPAC, Ready for Hillary.

Katy Perry Goofs Off on ESPN College GameDay
Posted: at 7:45 pm
Katy Perry lit up a social media storm this morning with her appearance as guest picker onESPN College GameDay this morning.
Perry was live on set with host Chris Fowler and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard as each made their winning picks for todays biggest college football games.
During her appearance, Katy Perry entertained the crowd with props and antics not everyone found funny. She also was hitting on Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight, which immediately became a vine. See below.
We collected what Twitter had to say about Perry's appearance on ESPN below.
A Youtuber uploaded the Katy Perry ESPN segment in decent quality. You can watch it below.
The Katy Perry Story:
Katy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California. Both her mother and father were conservative Christians who had lived in their youth as hippies and had been there and done that as far as libertinism was concerned. They wanted to instill a solid sense of morals and virtue in their daughter. When you climb up Perrys family tree you discover that she has Portuguese, German, Irish and English blood running through her veins. The mixed breeding sure came in handy as far as her innovative mind is concerned.
Perry has a brother who is younger in age to her and she has an older sister. Katy seems to have had a case of Malcolm in the Middle syndrome. She was neither the elder and hence didnt bear all the responsibility of taking care of the youngsters in the family, nor was she the youngest and thus she was not the family favorite. Maybe that is why she found consolation and peace in her genuine musical artistic creations.
Half her life (till her teenage years) Katy remained strictly tied to the churches and gospel atmosphere of religious music. Her family members had to struggle to pay the bills sometimes. But they made sure that their children had no contact with anything devilish or bearing the slightest secular aura of humanism. Perry got a brand new guitar for her 13th birthday. She began earnestly practicing and also began recording her vocal sessions. Some other interests of her included: rollerblading, surfing and skateboarding. And you cant be careful on a skateboardnowcan you!? Perry was a very gawky and awkward teenager. But soon when the curves started coming, she developed her feminine charms and wiles.
Soon Perry started taking dancing lessons and learnt how to do the jitterbug. And after going through various learning experiences (both formal and informal) she emerged a rising starlet and songstress on the scene. Her albums and songs wowed the audiences and the crowds crowed and went rowdy with joy at her concerts. Her tours included the Prismatic World Tour and the California Dreams Tour. She has been a judge on American Idol and has also collaborated with Kanye West, Elton John and Rihanna on many songs of hers. She got married to Russell Brand almost half a decade ago but two years into their marriage the two decided to divorce one another. She has been with singer John Mayer ever since.
Book Review: ‘In Life School’ by Rob Whalley
Posted: October 4, 2014 at 9:48 am
In our modern, fast-paced, technology-driven world, we are so constantly interrupted by thousands of advertisements, constant beeping text messages, and countless tweets, that it is easy for us to go astray and forget our true purpose in life - to learn to be better people, to evolve and improve, and to use what we learn to make a difference in the world.
Rob Whalley brings us back to the basics by reminding us of the Golden Rule and everything else we learned, or should have learned, in life, with his simple, straightforward, and poignant new book, In Life School. As the subtitle expresses, "Living Is Your Classroom, Experience Is Your Teacher, Loving Is Your Test." Just because we graduate from high school or even earn a Ph.D., does not mean we ever stop learning. We are never going to be smart enough, educated enough, or even wise enough not to receive another life lesson.
Rob has spent his own life learning about life's true purpose, and in the process, he has learned all the lessons he offers in this book. He has been an accomplished writer and performer of music, been married and divorced, made tons of money and nearly lost it all. He has known moments of great joy, and he has known moments of despair. In other words, he has learned his life lessons and learned them well.
Now, in this book, he offers up many lifetimes of wisdom. A lot of people could write a book about their experiences, but while Rob includes a few personal stories from his life, he is no writer of straightforward autobiography. As a songwriter, he has a love for musical language, and so he weaves together various strands of poetry, inspirational quotes, illustrative stories, proverbs, and personal experiences to create a fugue of wisdom that truly has become his magnum opus.
It is hard to find words to describe a book that reads like a songwriter's treasure chest, but each chapter is filled with gems the reader will appreciate. This book is one you can read again and again, and every time you will find something new to make you pause and reconsider your life. It can also be opened randomly at any point to have an inspirational quote or an awe-inspiring story jump out at you and give you advice or words of wisdom to help you through a difficult time.
Rather than calling them chapters, in keeping with his school theme, Rob divides the book into sections he calls "courses." There are sixteen in all, and each one focuses on a major life lesson, such as: Feeling Your Emotions, Happiness, Gratitude, Everything is Happening for a Reason, Forgiveness, Taking Action, and Loving Is Your Test. Each of these lessons is then broken down further into various stories, poems, song lyrics, creeds, or workbook lessons. The variety keeps the book's momentum going as well as lending the book a tone of wisdom and peace. In fact, as I read, I felt ultimately that peace was exuding from these pages, and it might not be too much to compare Rob's tone to Eckhart Tolle's, but I find Rob's writing more accessible, written in a language we will all understand, and more memorable as a result.
I can't adequately describe all the stories, poems, and words of wisdom in this book in a short book review, but I will mention a few parts that stood out for me. I loved Rob's stories about surfing in Mexico, a tug of war between a shark and a car, and how his quick-thinking as a teenager saved his and his friends' lives. I appreciated all the inspirational quotes from famous and everyday people that he weaves together; a couple of my favorites were: "You are beautifully enough! Your stories of 'not good enough' are fictional novels, written by a culture still hiding its light under a bushel of shame" said by his Facebook friend, Jeff Brown, who is also the author of Ascending With Both Feet On The Ground. Another great quote is by the nineteenth century philosopher William James, "The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives."
Changing our attitudes is a big theme throughout In Life School. Positive thinking oozes out of every page. Rob is clearly a believer in the Law of Attraction, and many of his stories and questions ask us to look at our own perceptions and the judgments we make about others and life, and then Rob shows how a simple change of mindset can make all the difference to us. One perfect example Rob shares is the story of "The Three Hairs." I'll just share the first paragraph to give you a taste of how a positive attitude can change our lives:

Who: Candice Gallmeyer, 21, joined LogoUp, from BizCard Xpress in Lauderhill, as a graphic designer. She works on email and direct mail marketing campaigns and logo pre-production proofs, for the company, which recently ranked #80 on the INC500 list of the fastest growing private companies in America.
Why my job is important: I'm part of a team that through best practices provides excellent customer service experiences. I process orders and communicate with customers. Adding my graphic design skills helps assure clients their logos will appear proportionate and on the right spot on garments and accessories like hats or bags.
Resume
Experience:Freelance graphic design; production director for an online and print magazine.
Education: Associates in graphic design, Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale
Community: Broward Waterway Cleanup; design work for a local branch of Alcoholics Anonymous
On the job
Top goal: To utilize my knowledge of branding to help build our corporate identity
Professional challenge: There's always someone willing to "do it for less." It's a huge relief to be working for a company with a constant flow of business that still allows me to express my own creativity.
Industry challenge: In the fast-paced world of eCommerce arises the customer's desire to receive their order almost instantaneously, especially considering many have their own deadlines to meet. In turn, we work to improve productivity and assure the customer that they will receive their orders on time such as implementing faster shipping methods to help cut production time.
