How to Be 10% Happier

TIME Ideas psychology How to Be 10% Happier
Shane Parrish writes Farnam Street
Think you had a bad day?
Dan Harris had a panic attack on live TV in front of millions of people.
Something had to change. He knew it. Almost immediately after the panic attack on the air he was assigned to cover religion, which introduced him to meditation, which made him, as he puts it, 10% happier.
He wrote about his on-air panic attack in great detail in his fascinating book 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually WorksA True Story.
Harris argues that meditation has a PR problem.
largely because its most prominent proponents talk as if they have a perpetual pan flute accompaniment. If you can get past the cultural baggage, though, what youll find is that meditation is simply exercise for your brain. Its a proven technique for preventing the voice in your head from leading you around by the nose. To be clear, its not a miracle cure. It wont make you taller or better-looking, nor will it magically solve all of your problems. You should disregard the fancy books and the famous gurus promising immediate enlightenment. In my experience, meditation makes you 10% happier. Thats an absurdly unscientific estimate, of course. But still, not a bad return on investment.
Originally Dan wanted to call his book The Voice in My Head Is an A******. We all have that voice.
To be clear, Im not talking about hearing voices, Im talking about the internal narrator, the most intimate part of our lives. The voice comes braying in as soon as we open our eyes in the morning, and then heckles us all day long with an air horn. Its a fever swamp of urges, desires, and judgments. Its fixated on the past and the future, to the detriment of the here and now. Its what has us reaching into the fridge when were not hungry, losing our temper when we know its not really in our best interest, and pruning our inboxes when were ostensibly engaged in conversation with other human beings. Our inner chatter isnt all bad, of course. Sometimes its creative, generous, or funny. But if we dont pay close attention which very few of us are taught how to do it can be a malevolent puppeteer.

Guided Meditation with Eckhart Tolle – YouTube
Posted: March 3, 2015 at 7:49 pm
A guided meditation on the nature of awareness (aliveness) with Eckhart Tolle.
"All that is required of you is to be in a state of attentive listening. Don't just listen with the head. Listen with your entire body, so to speak. Feel the aliveness, the animating presence, throughout the body as you listen.I recommend that you listen and/or watch these tapes over and over. Each time you listen, it will feel as if you were listening for the first time. Each time you listen, you will grow in presence.
"Most people confuse the Now with what happens in the Now, but that's not what it is. The Now is deeper than what happens in it. It is the space in which it happens. So do not confuse the content of this moment with the Now. The Now is deeper than any content in it."
"When you step into the Now, you step out of the content of your mind. The incessant stream of thinking slows down. Thoughts don't absorb all your attention anymore, don't draw you in totally. Gaps arise in between thoughts - spaciousness, stillness. You begin to realize how much vaster and deeper you are than your thoughts."
"Thoughts, emotions, sense perceptions, and whatever you experience make up the content of your life. "My Life" is what you derive your sense of self from, and "my life" is content, or so you believe."
"Many expressions that are in common usage, and sometimes the structure of language itself, reveal the fact that people don't know who they are. You say: "He lost his life" or "my life," as if life were something that you can possess or lose. The truth is: you don't have a life, you are life. The One Life, the one consciousness that pervades the entire universe and takes temporary form to experience itself as a stone or blade of grass, as an animal, a person, a star or a galaxy. Can you sense deep within that you already know that? Can you sense that you already are That?"
"The next step in human evolution is to transcend thought. This is now our urgent task. It doesn't mean not to think anymore, but to simply not be completely identified with thought, possessed by thought"
Most people find it difficult to believe that a state of consciousness totally free of all negativity is possible. And yet this is the liberated state to which all spiritual teachings point. It is the promise of salvation, not in an illusory future but right here and now.
"Look at a tree, a flower, a plant. Let your awareness rest upon it. How still they are, how deeply rooted in Being. Allow nature to teach you stillness."
Enjoy the greatest adventure a human being can be engaged in: to be part of the emergence of a new consciousness. ~ Quotes by Eckhart Tolle ________________________________________________________

I’m A Celebrity Australia 2015 episode 16 recap: At long last, the claws are out

By Clare RigdenFeb. 23, 2015, 5:05 p.m.
Tonight we find out it's been 21 long days in the jungle for our intrepid celebs. That's an awful lot of beans and rice. How's the old jungle drop toilet holding up? It doesn't bear thinking about.
Elephant race.
And so are the stars.
Tonight we find out it's been 21 long days in the jungle for our intrepid celebs. That's an awful lot of beans and rice. How's the old jungle drop toilet holding up? It must be getting seriously backed-up by now. It doesn't bear thinking about. So we won't.
Instead we'll give them all some kudos three weeks is a really long time to be shacked up in the jungle, especially not with not-much-to-say-but-boy-he-looks-great Tyson. And feisty little Lauren. And old'no-shirt' Merv. And crazy Maureen. God bless her, she's obviously lovely, but how many of us could really listen to her spouting Eckhart Tolle-isms all day long?
She was no doubt channeling the power of positive thought when it came time to pick teams for the Tucker Trial. She was worried she'd be last chosen. But, as Chrissie pointed out, you can't leave Marcia Brady sitting on the bench. It turns out you can leave Merv Hughes. And they did, leading him to muse that "no one wants the fat kid." Ouch.
Yep, things are starting to get a bit tetchy out there in the wilds of Africa, and later we learn there are some serious divisions emerging. And it's all Freddie's fault.
"He's their alpha," Joel points out, saying he seems to hold some kind of weird sway over the other men in camp. "It's become the back seat of the school bus. It's exhausting," he adds. "They keep referring to me as one of the girls."
Oh dear. But also yay for Ten! Finally some of the kind of snarky remarks we've been waiting three weeks for. More please!
