The video below takes us through the process of the creation of the chess pieces and what went into what characters he would use for the set.

This is pretty awesome! I enjoy a good game of chess and it would be a nice break from playing the game after dying hundreds of times trying to beat certain bosses in the game!

HYDERABAD: Telangana chess prodigy Raja Rithvik secured the silver medal at the Laplagne International Chess Championship held in France on Saturday with a score of seven points out of nine rounds.

Hailing from Manthani, Peddapalli, the 20-year-old remained undefeated throughout the tournament, winning in five games and drawing four against 184 players representing 22 countries. With a live FIDE rating of 2,511, Rithvik stands globally in the 778th position and 41st in India. He is Indias 70th Grandmaster.

Another Indian bags bronze

GM Moussard Jules of France claimed the championship title with 7.5 points, exceeding Rithviks score by half a point. Another Indian player, GM Iniyan Panneerselvam, secured the bronze medal with seven points. The final round game between Jules and Rithvik concluded in a draw after 28 moves.

Currently pursuing engineering at KL University in Hyderabad, Rithvik trains under the guidance of renowned coach N Rama Raju at the RACE Chess Academy. Coach Raju has played a significant role in the development of world no. 4 Arjun Erigaisi and Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika from 2016 to 2019.

Additionally, Rithvik is also receiving online coaching from Ukraines Alexander Goloshchapov, a renowned coach credited with helping 10 Indians achieve Grandmaster status.

President of the Telangana State Chess Association KS Prasad extended his congratulations to Rithvik for his outstanding achievement.

Chess Table Murder: One Dead, One Wounded in Latest Spasm of Violence in the East Village – ourtownny.com

Dried blood could be seen on a chess table next to a coffee cup inside Tompkins Sq. Park where two people were shot on the morning of July 12.

One victim, a 74 year-old man was administered CPR on the scene but perished and was pronounced dead shortly after he was raced to Bellevue Hospital. A second victim, a 44 year old male, staggered out of the park and into a deli on Avenue A near the corner of E. 8th St. He too was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Said one poster on the blog EV Grieve, I live on the corerm of 7th and A. I heard the gunshots and immediately looked out my window. I saw the 44 year old victim running across A with blood all over his shirt.

A sad day in the EV, he continued. I hope they find the shooter.

Another poster who went by Sarah on the site said, Jesus Christ. This is awful. Sympathies to the victims and their families.

Police told Straus News that no arrests have been made.

Ron Luvov, a retired guidance counselor who lives in Stuyvesant Town told Our Town he was going to head to the park to do some bird watching and grab lunch when he got the alert about the shooting on the Citizens app.

Theres definitely more crime happening lately, he said. Its back to the 80s.

Another young woman the scene said, I used to live around here and come back all the time. While she said crime seems to have spiked recently, she said long time denizens of the neighborhood tell me it was a lot worse years ago.

The chess tables have been a source of problems in the park in recent years. Police said a person of interest was seen in the park wearing gloves, a mask and a hoodie shortly before the shooting at 9:45 a.m. He fled East on E. 7th St. after the shooting. Police were said to be searching for crime scene footage of the shooting.

At least five shots rang out, according to one posting on the blog EV Grieve.

Luvov said there seems to be a growing spate of violent crime in the area lately, although he noted that a recent fatal stabbing a few blocks north two weeks earlier resulted in a clean up drive by law enforcement. The finally cleaned up E. 14th St, Luvov said.

Eric Adams and local city council leaders had called for a crackdown on vagrants who were congregating along the south side of East. 14th between Ave. A and First Ave. after the triple stabbing

The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on E. 14th St. runs a weekly flea market in the court yard between the church and the now shuttered elementary school, but the licensed vendors inside also seemed to attract a raft of unlicensed vendors to the sidewalk outside in recent years. Locals tabbed the unlicensed vendorswho set up blankets on block and sold everything from canned food, housewares and electronicsthe thieves market.

In the stabbing death on June 30, police arrested a homeless man, Alejandro Piedra, 30, and charged him with murdering 38 -year-old Clemson Coxfield, who had attempted to come the aid of a woman who was also stabbed by a deranged Piedra. According to one report in the New York Times, Piedra had some stolen items that he was attempting to exchange for drugs on the block. But when he was turned down, he went on a violent rampage.

Inside Tompkins Sq. Park, there were was several shootings in March only five days apart. In one incident, two innocent bystanders were wounded in a March 16th shooting. In another shooting incident five days later, no one was injured. Police arrested Waldemar Alverio, 33, on attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment charges for the two shootings that occurred on March 16 and March 21.

No arrests had been made in the July 12 shooting at presstime but police said the investigation is continuing.

The field consists of seven "regular" Grand Chess Tour players plus three players invited by "wildcard". Apart from Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi and Ivan Saric, who represents the host country, Magnus Carlsen was also due to take part. Leon Masters Day 1: Anand Beats Topalov As He Hunts 10th Title – Chess.com

Posted: July 1, 2024 at 2:37 am

without comments

15th World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand defeated one of his great rivals GM Veselin Topalov 2.5-1.5 on Friday to reach the Final of the 2024 Leon Masters. He'll face the winner of Saturday's Semifinal between GM Arjun Erigaisi and local hero GM Jaime Santos in Sunday's Final as he aims to make it 10 titles in the Spanish city.

The second Semifinal starts Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. ET / 16:30 CEST / 8 p.m. IST.

This event is the 37th edition of the Leon Masters, a tournament that has been won by World Champions Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, and Magnus Carlsen. The player who has most made Leon his home, however, is Anand, who has played the event 15 times and won on no less than nine occasions.

Leon Masters Winners

54-year-old Anand said it would be "magnificent" to round off his career in Leon with a 10th win, while in the Semifinal he was paired to meet the player he won a World Championship match against in Sofia in 2010, 49-year-old Topalov.

The Bulgarian also has happy memories of Leon, and not just winning the title in 1997. He said after the drawing of lots that he made his debut in elite chess 31 years ago in Leon, when he played in the 1993 tournament and got to face former World Champion Anatoly Karpovin fact, they shared third place on 5.5/9, with GM Leonid Yudasin scoring 7/9.

The other Semifinal is between two young players, 27-year-old local star and defending champion, Santos, and 20-year-old Arjun, who has stormed up to world number-four by playing everywhere, both accepting invitations and playing relatively minor opens.

The format is four rapid games where each player has 20 minutes for all moves, plus a 10-second increment each move. Only if the score is tied 2-2 will a playoff take place with 3+2 blitz games.

The match opened with two wild draws, with Anand later commenting on the live broadcast: "The truth is it was very difficult. I didnt start the match very well, but I survived!"

I didn't start the match very well, but I survived!

Viswanathan Anand

The first clash was a very sharp Vienna Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nc3) where Topalov built up a dominant position where his bishop on c6 completely dominated Anand's rooks on a7 and e7. After 28...Re6? White was winning, but not after the Bulgarian's 29.Bd7?. He was half-expecting his opponent to resign, but it turned out Black was suddenly completely OK!

The second game began with a slow maneuvering Ruy Lopez but suddenly burst into life when Topalov got to sacrifice an exchange. Soon afterward he got a chance to launch a decisive attack on Anand's king but missed one crucial trick.

Topalov quipped that he'd made a mouse-slip when he later blundered a pawn.

Topalov noted, "In sport you have to take your chances," and it was Anand who seized his chance in game three.

An innocuous-looking middlegame position suddenly saw Anand able to launch a kingside attack, and although 37...Nf4+?! isn't one of the computer-approved kills it did ultimately prove enough to give Anand victory.

That's our Game of the Day, which GM Dejan Bojkov analyzes below:

The final game was, therefore, a must-win for Topalov, who played the French Defense, but Anand soon traded into an endgame where only he could be better and went on to make a draw from a position of strength.

Anand-Arjun could be a fascinating clash of the Indian generations in the Final on Sunday, but first Santos will try to stop Arjun in Saturday's Semifinal.

The 2024 Leon Masters is a four-player knockout taking place in Leon, Spain, from June 28-30, featuring GMs Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Arjun Erigaisi, and Jaime Santos. Each match consists of four 20+10 rapid games. If the scores are tied, the players compete in 3+2 blitz games.

$1 Million Buy-In Tournament Cancelled As Niemann Pulls Out – Chess.com

Posted: at 2:37 am

without comments

Perhaps it sounded too wild to be true. The $1 million buy-in tournament with GMs Hans Niemann, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, scheduled for November 21, 2024, in Dusseldorf, Germany, has been cancelled by organizer Wadim Rosenstein after Niemann tweeted on Thursday that he had withdrawn from the event.

Nothing seemed to be standing in the way of the one-day, $4 million poker-style tournament to actually happen when Rosenstein confirmed to Chess.com on June 11 that funds of all four players had been secured and that he had received Niemann's signed contract. 16 days later, the 21-year-old American grandmaster pulled the plug.

In a tweet on Thursday, Niemann said that he had withdrawn from the event "due to contractual disputes," saying it was "unfortunate considering I had already secured the required funds, signed a contract, and started my preparations. Sometimes things just dont work out how you would like them to."

In a phone call with Chess.com, Rosenstein didn't want to go into detail about what exactly happened. "I don't want to make it a scandal," he said on Thursday evening, European time.

Rosenstein did note that, although all four players had secured their $1 million, actual funds hadn't been transferred yet. The deadline for that was a month before the tournament, so October 21.

According to Rosenstein, a lot of time and effort had already been put into preparation. Asked whether he was displeased with Niemann potentially breaching his contract, and whether action would be taken, Rosenstein said: "It doesn't make sense to discuss the details or anything. The tournament is off, that's all. Nobody wants a scandal."

Minutes after the phone call, Rosenstein confirmed on X that the tournament was off: "I regret to inform you that the WR Chess Masters High Roller Event, which had commitments from 4 players under signed contracts, will not take place. As a passionate chess fan, I was eagerly anticipating this event."

Less than an hour later, Niemann followed up with another tweet. He wrote that he "started to have doubts about the tournaments legitimacy and way of handling business," and that he "heard reports of the organizer potentially financially supporting other players entrance fees, and after requesting the organizer to confirm or deny this, they failed to comment."

Niemann also revealed that he had agreed to play a blitz match against GM Wesley So that was somehow related to the buy-in tournament. According to Niemann, the commercial terms for that match "were later changed when an additional contract was issued. Private messages were also deleted that showed my acceptance of the previous terms, only increasing my distrust and skepticism."

Chess.com reached out to Niemann for comment. The other four players involved in the story, Abdusattorov, Caruana, Nepomniachtchi, and So, are all playing in the Superbet Chess Classic Romania at the moment and were not available for comment.

In another phone call on Friday morning, Rosenstein provided comments to Chess.com about some of the claims Niemann had made in his second tweet. He denied that the contract was poor: "My aim is to make things easy for chess players, so I work with contracts that are easy to understand. With many players, I work with handshake agreements. There are no penalties for not participating. What for? I wouldn't judge someone for not participating in something that he doesn't want to participate in."

On the topic of financially supporting other player's entrance fees, Rosenstein noted that he intended to pay So for a "warm-up match" against Niemann before the main event. Rosenstein denied that "additional commercial terms were later changed when an additional contract was issued," as Niemann had stated. "I prepared a separate contract for the warm-up match, as it was a separate event, but Hans did not want to sign it."

"I made an offer to make this tournament, and in the end it didn't work," Rosenstein said. "I am fine with it, and I am glad the situation came out now, and not a month before the tournament."

According to Rosenstein, it was surprising that Niemann signed his contract and only started talking about "contractual disputes" more than two weeks later. He added: "Niemann is a strong, young, talented player. I wish him all the best. But if you ask me if I will invite him to my other tournaments, that is a big question now."

The buy-in tournament was scheduled for November 21, 2024, in Dusseldorf, Germany. The format was a double round-robin among four players with six rounds of rapid (15+0) games. All four players were required to bring $1 million to the table; the winner would walk away with $2 million. The second-placed player would get $1.5 million, the third-placer would earn $0.4 million (losing $0.6 million on the deal) and the fourth player would get $0, losing a full million. $100,000 would go to the organizer.

The remarkable event sprung out of a conversation in May on social media platform X between Niemann and Rosenstein, a businessman and owner of a conglomerate of companies called WR Group. Rosenstein also organized last year's WR Masters in Dusseldorf (February 2023) and the World Rapid Team Championship (August 2023). He will only participate in the second edition of the latter event August 1-6 in Astana, Kazakhstan, and organize two brand new tournaments October 31-November 3 in Dubai and October 14-18 in London.

When Niemann inquired about the London event, Rosenstein came up with the buy-in format and invited the American GM to it, also on X. A week later, he confirmed the event and the players to Chess.com.

While the event is now off, Rosenstein wrote on X: "Hopefully our idea can help other organizers pull off tournaments like this in the future."
