Kiwi seeks acquittal over Buddha image
Posted: at 5:54 am
A New Zealand man charged with insulting Buddhism to promote a bar in Myanmar will learn his fate later this month.
VGastro bar general manager Philip Blackwood said he had no intention of insulting religion when he used an image of a Buddha wearing headphones to promote cheap drinks at the bar in the capital Yangon (Rangoon).
The 32-year-old is charged under the nation's strict religious laws for insulting religion after posting the offending image on the bar's Facebook page in December.
Two other bar staff, who are both Myanmar nationals, are also on trial.
The court will hand down its judgment on March 17.
AFP reported the Myanmar owner of the bar told the court Blackwood was responsible for the ad.
The trio face up to four years in jail if found guilty of breaching the Religion Act.
Under it anyone who attempts to insult, destroy or damage any religion can be punished by a maximum of two years in jail, with another two-year penalty for those who insult religion through the written word.
Blackwood's lawyer Mya Thway said his client had not intended to insult religion and was simply promoting a cheap drinks night.
"I ask for the acquittal and release of Mr Philip," the lawyer told the court, said AFP.

Myanmar bar owner says New Zealander responsible for Buddha ad
Posted: March 3, 2015 at 9:48 am
YANGON - The Myanmar owner of a Yangon bar accused of insulting Buddhism in a drinks promotion told the court Tuesday the New Zealand bar manager was responsible for the offending ad that could see them jailed for up to four years.
Philip Blackwood, a general manager of the VGastro bar in Yangon, has been held in the city's notorious Insein prison along with the bar's owner and manager, both Myanmar nationals, since posting the offending mocked-up photo of the Buddha wearing DJ headphones in December.
The poster triggered outrage in the Buddhist majority country, which is witnessing a surge in religious nationalism, and led to the arrest of the 32-year-old along with Tun Thurein, the bar's 40-year-old owner, and manager Htut Ko Ko Lwin, 26, for insulting religion.
Bar owner Tun Thurein made a personal appeal to the court Tuesday, saying Blackwood was responsible for the Facebook posting.
"It was not my instruction. I wasn't involved at all. We are not guilty," he told the court, asking for the release of himself and the manager.
The trio face up to four years in jail if found guilty of breaching the Religion Act with the contentious poster, which was quickly withdrawn from the bar's Facebook page as the furore erupted.
"The verdict will be given at 12pm (1.30pm Tues Singapore time) on Tuesday 17 March," court judge Ye Lwin said on Tuesday.
Under the act, anyone who attempts to insult, destroy or damage any religion can be punished by a maximum of two years in jail, with another two-year penalty for those who insult religion through the written word.
Delivering his final arguments, Blackwood's lawyer Mya Thway said his client had "no intention" of insulting religion and was simply promoting a cheap drinks night, reiterating a statement made by the New Zealander at an earlier hearing.
"I ask for the acquittal and release of Mr Philip," the lawyer told the court.

Hope White, newcomer to Sarasota. February 7, 2015; Herald Tribune/Carla Varisco photo
In the two years after her mother moved to San Diego when she was a child, Hope White attended a half-dozen schools. She remembers the day she came home from a new third-grade class and said to her mother, But Mom, that was so easy!
It was only much later, when she was pursuing a graduate degree in education at UCLA, that White realized she must have been placed into a lower-level class because of the color of her skin.
I knew it was race, says White, who has been searching for a position in her chosen field of education administration since arriving in Sarasota five months ago. It made me think about how a teachers perceptions can cause a student to succeed or fail.
Race wasnt something White, 34, was conscious of as a child. She grew up in a spiritual tradition known as Nichiren Daishonin Buddhism, a practice noted for its belief that all people are inherently capable of attaining enlightenment. Chanting, playing instruments and putting on performances within the communitys accepting atmosphere remain a fond part of her childhood memories.
We believe everyone has the opportunity to bring out their potential, says White, who immediately joined a local Nichiren group after moving here. Racism is alive and well and always will be, but I dont have to be influenced by it. I want to embrace as many people as possible. Thats what humanism is all about.
In the predominantly white area where she grew up, hers was the only African-American family on the block. But both her family and the sole Latino and Filipino families in the neighborhood were made to feel welcome.
When we all got together it was like a little United Nations, she remembers.
Though she wasnt forced into her spiritual practice, from the start Nicherin Buddhisms non-violent, inclusive philosophy appealed to her. But at her mothers insistence that it would be a resume builder, she enrolled in the military after high school. Stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina as a member of the airborne division, she says it took every ounce I had not to go AWOL.
I couldnt deal with training my body and mind to harm other people. I thought, if were going to have a military, lets make it a humanistic one that does construction, education. Creating value instead of destroying it.
