Do you go to church back home?" I asked Karin in her native Norwegian. The blond, blue-eyed exchange-student was visiting our church, and I had enjoyed catching up on the latest news about Norway. But now it was time to move on to my special assignment. Since her host family found it difficult to communicate with her about spiritual things in English, they had asked me to find out whether she was a Christian or not.

"No," she answered.

"Are there many Christians in your school?"

"There are some who go to church at Christmas or Easter."

"That sounds like me, back when I lived there. We only went to church on Christmas Eve, and no one took it very seriously. But now I am more interested in spiritual things. I keep wondering how people who don't know God face things like cancer and death? Do you ever wonder what will happen to you when you die?

"I'll go to some sort of heaven. I'm a nice person."

"How do you know you're nice enough? Who sets the standard for the niceness needed to get into heaven?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. Probably God."

Sensing both disinterest and annoyance, I quickly brought the conversation back inside the boundaries of her comfort zone.

Did Karin's reasoning sound familiar? It did to me. She admitted that God might set the standards, but she doesn't know Him, so she simply imagines what He wants. In other words, she sets her own standards.

This new-paradigm thinking is changing people everywhere. Karin believes there will be a heavennot because God says so, but because it comforts her and hides the finality of death. Why throw out a good idea? But her view of heaven is little more than a pie-in-the-sky hope. Like most people today, she has no firm basis for questioning the exciting New Age pieces of the puzzle she calls heaven.

A New kind of Heaven

You met Barbara Marx Hubbard, president of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution, in chapter 5. When she spoke at the Renaissance of Christian Spirituality conference in San Francisco, some of her followers urged me to buy her book Revelation which was dictated by a spirit "voice" called "Christ." I bought it, and shuddered as I read her occult interpretations of God's book of Revelation. Those who know God's Word would notice its eerie likeness to God's original message. Those who don't know the Biblical version could easily think this is it.

"Now you see through a glass darkly," wrote Mrs. Hubbard, twisting biblical truth into a confusing mish-mash of occult ideas. "Soon you will see face to face. Now your are in pain. Then you will be in joy. Now you fear that you cannot manage a complex planetary system. Soon you will know that the planetary system is guided by a cosmic template. . . . A New Heaven and a New Earth shall you create."[3]

Heaven, she continues, "is but the next stage of your development, with many more to come."[4]

Since the "voice" first spoke to Barbara Marx Hubbard in 1980, it has taught her about a "collective transformation" that will take place when a "CRITICAL MASS" of "individuals align to shift the basic thought form of earth from fear and separation to unity" and thus "shift the consciousness of the earth" and lead to a new "birth."[5] If humanity cooperates with the plan, each human "mind will be consciously connected with the Mind of God."[6] Those who don't will be "selected" for destruction.[7]

Does this sound too strange to be relevant? It shouldn't. Much of this teaching is seeping into mainstream churches as well as the rest of our culture -- not because the masses are listening to Barbara Marx Hubbard, but because her source is the same as theirs. Occultism cloaked in "Christianese" has become part of our common language, challenging us to study God's Word and "test the spirits."

Listen carefully to Mrs. Hubbard's words, for Satan is counterfeiting everything that's good these days -- even good things like joy and laughter:

"An uncontrollable joy will ripple through the thinking layer of Earth. The co-creative systems, which are lying psychologically dormant in humanity will be activated. From within, all sensitive persons will feel the joy of the force, flooding their systems with love and attraction. It will be as irresistible as sex. It is supra-sex, the innate capacity to unite to create the next step of evolution..."

"As this joy flashes through the nervous systems of the most sensitive peoples on Earth, it will . . . . cause a shift in the consciousness of Earth."[8]

We should never fear genuine joy, but we need to guard against all false manifestation of spiritual power. If the "good feelings" that follow spiritual experiences don't line up with Scriptures, beware.

In other words, know the genuine truth well enough to recognize the counterfeits. The lies come in all kinds of wrappings and disguises. You may have heard of Arianna Huffington, one of the fast-rising female stars in conservative political circles and Washington society. The title of her latest book, The Fourth Instinct, refers to a spiritual force with "power to transform ourselves and our world."[10] You know she is not talking about God when she calls it "the bridge to this next stage in man's evolution and the voice calling us to cross over."[11]

"Even those who are not looking for 'a new heaven and a new earth'. . . recognize that what the millennium requires from us above all else is a psychological shift, a spiritual breakthrough,"[12] she says. The Fourth Instinct "is an evolutionary spiral based on a different set of imperatives -- for now the survival of the fittest will be the survival of the wisest."[13]

The wisest? According to whom?

Not to Christians who are still "clinging to the old"[14] world-view or paradigm which offers only "the bankrupt solutions of yesterday." They know all too well that "the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God," for "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile." (1 Corinthians 3:19-20)

Instead, Ms. Huffington urges her flock to follow a "universal force that will lead us beyond the last horizon of our known self toward a wiser, more loving, more luminous state of being."[15]

That brings us back to Barbara Marx Hubbard. "To be wise now, is to . . . . take the evolutionary perspective and see the world in process of transformation,"[16] she says. "Wisdom is to see reality, not as a static set of things, but as a . . . process leading toward godhood for humanity."[17]

Strange and mystical, isn't it? So is James Redfield's top-selling thriller, The Celestine Prophecy. It's huge readership proves the appeal of this occult message. Like Mrs. Hubbard and Mrs. Huffington, Redfield urges humanity to practice the psychic skills needed to produce a "critical" mass in order to speed our evolution. That means rejecting church leaders who block the new awareness.

When a local United Methodist church announced a weekly discussion group on the Celestine Prophecy, I decided to check it out. On my first visit, I found a group of about twenty men and women sharing their strange "coincidences", angelic visitations,[18] and other mystical experiences which supposedly led to a "conscious evolution" the focus of Barbara Marx Hubbard's message. Perhaps they believed, as Redfield promised, that they would one day transform into "pure light" and simply "walk into heaven."[19] In spite of the church setting, no one ever mentioned the likely possibility of counterfeit spirits. Apparently, the group viewed all kinds of spiritual feelings and experiences as good. Redfield's lie had become more believable

"For half a century now, a new consciousness has been entering the human world, a new awareness that can only be called transcendent, spiritual . . . .

"Once we understand. . . how to engage this allusive process and maximize its occurrence in our lives, human society will take a quantum leap into a whole new way of life . . . .

"All that any of us have to do is suspend our doubts and distractions just long enough . . . and miraculously, this reality can be our own.[20]

During the last Celestine Prophecy session, the teacher told us that we were close to becoming the "critical mass" of evolving minds that would catapult us into the next stage of "our" spiritual evolution. There we would accelerate the pace of our evolution and voluntarily limit reproduction and consumption. "Whole groups of people who have reached a certain level [would] become invisible, and the barrier between this life and the other world" would begin to crumble.

"Would we still have criminals?" asked a woman.

"There would be no need to steal, for all have the same values," answered the teacher. "We're moving toward heaven, a state of being where people are valued for their essence. . . . Fundamentalist people live . . . in a state of fear. . . . But someone who is truly spiritual, is serene. She lives in a state of grace."

"My sister-in law is like that," said another women. "She is wonderful. Always in that state of serenity, even when things get really hard."

"What does she believe?" asked the leader.

"In God. In Jesus Christ. She hurts a lot, but she has perfect peace."

The leader changed the subject.

The Sin of Separation

Did you ever read Aldous Huxley's futuristic classic, Brave New World? If you did, you may remember the occult ritual used to enforce planetary peace and oneness. No one could escape the hypnotic drills that quenched individualism and raised group consciousness: "The group was now complete, the solidarity circle perfect... Twelve of them ready to be made one, waiting to come together, to be fused, to lose their twelve separate identities in a larger being."[21]

Huxley's Brave New World carried a warning that few have taken seriously. Today many of its scary ideas are more pervasive than when Huxley first suggested them -- not because his voice sang louder than others, but because so many others sang in the same choir. Since their message fit both current trends and academic liberalism, it began to resonate through our educational institutions at every level. Today, it's preparing a new generation for social revolution, and radical feminists want girls to lead the way.

United Nations leader Robert Muller may not care which sex leads the revolution as long as Huxley's unity becomes global reality. "Conflicts will diminish as our global, universal, spiritual and cosmic awareness increase,"[22] he assures us. Ripe for change, many are listening. The fact that Mullers mystical unity matches the spiritual evolution taught by Barbara Marx Hubbard, Arianna Huffington, and James Redfield multiplies the influence of all four.

Muller is no small player in the global transformation. As the former under-Secretary of the United Nations and the current Chancellor of the UN-sponsored University of Peace, he may be the world's most enthusiastic promoter of the kind of international education system outlined by the radical feminists in Beijing. His World Core Curriculum, which laid the foundation for global education in the United States and around the world, is based on the messages received from the Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul, the spirit guide channeled by occultist Alice Bailey.

Does all this seen complicated? It is. I wish we could ignore these lies and occult networks. We probably could, if they weren't already transforming our churches. But since they have twisted the way Christians see God, heaven and everything else, we can't ignore them. Too many people are falling into the trap.

Another window into the widening web of globalism opened at the 1994 "Women of Vision" conference in Washington DC. The highlight of the event was the World Peace Ceremony which joined the audience of 500 women and 50 men in a universal prayer for peace. Many had tears in their eyes as they prayed to a cosmic force, not God, for universal love and forgiveness.[23]

Among the guests at the conference were Barbara Marx Hubbard, the Dalai Lama's sister Jetsun Pema, and Ann Rockefeller Roberts, president of the Fund of the Four Directions (remember all those sacred circles that honored the four directions) which helps wed the Rockefeller fortune to New Age globalism and Native American spirituality.

Robert Muller was there as well. Do you see the many mystical marriages that will help usher in the new global societythe counterfeit heaven on earth? The "Mind" behind the new global spirituality sends the same basic messages to all his ambassadors, whether they call themselves New Agers, Neopagans, or even "Christian."

The connections are important, because no single group could win the world to these new ideals. That radical feminists like Bella Abzug claim the right to speak for all the women in the world may seem absurd, but so what? She, Muller, Hubbard and all the rest are each playing their part in the globalist orchestra determined to raise global consciousness and speed the paradigm shift. They may be strangers to each other, but the evil puppeteer behind the scenes knows how to pull the strings and guide the action. That's what counts. Few realize that the angry idealism of feminist activists can be used by hard core globalist to reach a more ominous goal. As economist Dr. Thomas Sowell wrote in his review of Road to Serfdom,[24]

"Idealist socialists create systems in which idealists are almost certain to lose and be superseded by those whose drive for power, and ruthlessness in achieving it, make them the "fittest" to survive under a system where government power is the ultimate prize.... The issue is not what anyone intends but what consequences are in fact likely to follow."[25]

In other words, idealists can persuade, but they seldom rule. Idealism can awaken the masses and inspire a revolution, but it seldom governs. During the first part of the Russian revolution, ideology paved the way to change. But the manipulative power of Communist forces soon seized the victory and captured the throne.

Like the radical feminists at the Beijing Conference, Muller and other UN leaders have no tolerance for non-conformists. When speaking at some of the 1995 events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, Muller shared his vision for the future: a united world where all would live in harmony sharing a common set of human rights and responsibilities. People were free to believe anything -- as long as it was pantheistic, monistic and polytheistic. Even cross-less Christianity would fit. Biblical faith would not.

When the moderator invited questions from the audience, a man stood up. The startling exchange that followed left me with an uneasy insight into a form of intolerance that is incomprehensible to most Americans. The man's two questions seemed thoughtful and legitimate by traditional Western standards. Wouldn't you agree? He asked,

"In a pluralistic world, would a centralized institution tend to become insensitive to ideas other than its own? And if the UN becomes involved in spirituality, could it cause church-state violations?

In response, an angry woman in the audience stood up and shouted, "In Oklahoma we saw the result of men who hate our central government." She stormed out of the auditorium.

Sounding just as angry, Muller leaned into the microphone and began denouncing both people and nations who oppose global controls. After venting his anger on the USA for its reluctance to show wholehearted support for UN policies, he swore and left the podium. Is this the kind of tolerance the UN touts? Could Muller be so accustomed to approval from like-minded globalists, that he can tolerate nothing less?

Persecution

Muller's hatred for those who disagree permeates the global transformation. It doesn't matter whether the occult links in this movement are called witchcraft, feminist spirituality, Native American shamanism, or simply global spirituality. All envision a world where all human minds are connected to some kind of a global mind -- a "collective unconscious," a "Global Mind," "The Mind of God," or simply the "Goddess."

Since all versions of this occult spirituality follow the same occult master, they share a common hatred for the biblical God and His truth. "The world . . . hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil,"[26] said Jesus. It hates us, for the same reason. Therefore, opposition to the cosmic plan can be costly. As Barbara Marx Hubbard warns us,

"The selection process will exclude all who are exclusive. The selection process assures that only the loving will evolve to the stage of co-creator."[27]

Those who are "loving" in Ms Hubbard's eyes will be linked to the cosmic "Mind" she follows, and it will inspire their attitudes and actions. Genuine Christians would be "selected" out of Hubbard's evolutionary scheme. It sounds like a scary fantasy, but it comes close to what God told us would happen.

"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you," said Jesus, "and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake." (Matthew 24:9)

Remove the phrase "all nations", and He could have been referring to almost any time during the last two thousand years. Long ago, Roman Christians fought lions. Missionaries to Asia, Africa and South America were tortured, burned and stabbed. Untold millions were tormented and killed by Communists who rejected Christ but not impersonal psychic powers. And Nazi resistors faced the gas chambers along with the millions of Jews.

For two centuries, the spreading influence of Christianity calmed the seething hostilities of occultism, and God's people found a momentary haven. But our shelter may soon be ravaged by the coming millennial storms. "Many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another," continued Jesus. "Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved." (Matthew 24:10-13)

Endure? Where does endurance fit into the American dream? Or into contemporary church teaching? Or the feminist movement?

Endurance is almost a forgotten virtue, isn't it? Yet it's crucial to the battles ahead, whether end times are near us or still far away. Either way, it's time to prepare for radical changes. For the biblical and historical pattern shows us that when God's people or nations ignored truth, returned to paganism, and worshipped other gods, everyone suffered. With a heart that ached over the pain of His people,[28] God would pull back His hand of protection [29] and allow His people to face the terrors of life without Him -- usually droughts, famines, wars and plagues.

Eventually, the people would see what life was like without the Shepherd. The priests would roll out the dusty old Scriptures, tear their clothes in despair of their own rebellion, repent, and pray for healing. God always forgave and restored, for then as now He wants nothing more than to bless His precious people.

In spite of the glaring similarities between ancient Israel and today, there are some sobering differences. The vast communication network for occult indoctrination, the proliferation of seductive spiritual counterfeits, and our ignorance of occult dangers have set the stage for potential occult dominance that knows no precedent. In light of Biblical prophecy, could the oft-repeated cycle have become a downward spiral?

I don't know. God hasn't told us His schedule. Jesus gave us some signs to look for, but not the starting date for the tyrannical world government prophesied in Revelation 13. Only one thing is certain. The dreaded reign of the final antichrist [30] will come, but it will last only a moment in time.

"Learn this parable from the fig tree," said Jesus after telling His disciples about the false prophets, lawlessness, apostasy and persecution that would characterize the last days. "When its branch... puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near, at the very doors... Watch therefore..." (Matthew 24:32-33, 42)

It's much easier to focus on daily needs than to look at eternal things. But God tells us to be alert and ready, not distracted from His concerns.

"As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be," said Jesus. "For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.... Watch therefore..." (Matthew 24:37-39, 42)

The first lesson in watchfulness is to know and love truth. The world ruler will use all kinds of exciting miracles to prove his divine power, and most people will believe his boasts. For "the coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth..." (2 Thessalonians. 2:9) Pray this will not happen to those you love!

The second lessons follows. Since those who love truth will be hated by the world, we need to fix our eyes on the eternal life that no one can ever take from us. A story I heard long ago shows the joy that comes with a heavenly focus. I may not remember the exact words, but the story goes something like this.

Back in the second century, Roman authorities told the Christian leader Polycarp to stop warning people about paganism and cease telling them the life-saving truth about Jesus Christ. He refused.

"Then we'll take all your possessions," they told him." Go ahead," he said. "My God has promised to supply all I need according to His riches in glory. He will take care of me." (Philippians 4:17-19)

"If you don't stop preaching, we'll take your wife and children and kill them," they threatened.

"You can't kill them," he answered, "for they belong to God. I will spend all eternity in heaven with them."

"Then we'll kill you."

"That would be best of all, for I would go immediately into the presence of my Lord. Nothing could be more wonderful."

Polycarp's martyrdom only magnifies the joy of His eternal perspective. His faith lives on as a rich reminder to us that when we are joined to Christ through the cross, we have an eternal treasure in heaven. That assurance doesn't diminish our present life; it makes it richer and fuller.

"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain," said Paul. Living or dying, he enjoyed the privileges of citizenship in heaven. Either way he would serve the God he loved. Death would have been easier, for while he lived, he was stoned, imprisoned, chained, tortured, starved, and beaten for his faith. Yet, he radiated hope:

Heaven is Forever

What unseen things did Paul "see"? What thoughts comforted him when His body ached, his food was gone, and his friends forsook him?

Friends and food may be important, but they meant little compared to "the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord."[31] Nothing could weaken his confidence that "the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us"? (Romans 8:18) Part that glory would be a whole new beautiful body in place of the old broken one:

Instead of pain and loss, there would be an inheritance -- something so wonderful and glorious that we can't even comprehend it with our present earth-bound minds. Paul saw only glimpse, but we can sense his anticipation:

"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs -- heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together." Romans 8:16-17

Special blessings would be reserved for those who suffer for His sake.[32] Among the first in line would be those who gave their lives to do His will, but received little or no human praise for their faithfulness. In heaven, their "Father who sees in secret will reward" them with a love that far exceeds our finite understanding.[33]

While God, in His perfect justice, promises special rewards for those who gave Him their lives, all of heaven's citizens will find their "cup" of happiness overflowing. This final joy will be far deeper and fuller than all the earthly delights combined. Lacking earthly words for heavenly glories, the Bible can only use inadequate images like mansions and streets of gold to symbolize the very best the human mind can communicate. But those barely hint at the wonder and magnificence of our future home. "For now we see in a mirror, dimly...."[34]

New bodies, a new earth, no more pain, a heavenly inheritance that will last forever. . . While those promises delight my heart, they can't compare with the best of all: meeting our Bridegroom "face to face." We will stand before a wonderfully real Person, the King of the universe -- not simply an impersonal "glory" or radiating "light" as New Agers tell us. Many saints have described that heavenly moment, but no earthly words can do it justice. Paul tried: "Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air,"[36] he rejoiced, "and thus we shall always be with the Lord."

Do you see the contrast between the evolutionary one-world spirituality and God's unchanging heavenly realm? Unlike the new paradigm with its evolving human consciousness that absorbs human identity, the biblical truth is that we individually will spend eternity in the presence of Jesus Christ, who "is the same yesterday, today and forever."[37]

John, Jesus beloved friend and disciple, sensed how the wonder of Gods eternal nature would touch our human lives in that moment of transformation: "Beloved, now we are children of God," he began, "and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." Then he nudges us to take hold of this magnificent hope and keep it as a banner in our hearts: "And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." (1 John 3:1-3)

This hope changes us even now. Almost imperceptibly, a new understandinga more perfect and heavenly paradigmbegins to guide our hearts. "We can't feel at home in this world any more," goes an old song, for we realize that "our citizenship is in heaven!" (Philippians 3:19-20) Like the heroes and heroines of God's hall of fame (Hebrews 11), we fix our eyes on the heavenly city that beckons to all God's sojourners. The eyes of our hearts turn to Jesus, "and the things of earth grow strangely dim."

"Face to face with Christ my Savior," sang Fanny Crosby, the blind hymn writer who saw eternal realities more clearly than most people with eyes that see. Her songs still encourage thousands of believers to walk with God all the way home:

Welcome to the Adventure!

On this first evening Barbara will set the scene, touch on aspects of her own evolutionary experience since Birth 2012, and invite participants to share their own experiences since saying YES! to the greatest evolutionary adventure of all time.

The journey will begin with powerful, guided meditation with Patricia Ellsberg and an invocation of intention for the subsequent five days, and beyond.

Our Evolutionary Family will form. Well explore ways that we can empower each other to become our full potential selves during the advance and when we step out and into the world as active pioneers of the New Humanity.

Music will help stimulate the Impulse of Creation and together we will affirm our intentions, lovingly signalling to it that we are ready to emerge AS higher consciousness.

Old memetic codes that have destroyed millions of human beings and entire species of animals and plants are dying. In their place, new memetic codes are arising on which to build our work and success as Conscious Evolutionaries.

On Day 1, Barbara will call upon the impulse of evolution to take us the whole way in becoming Universal Humans. Patricia Ellsberg will establish the resonant field in which we will envision the evolution of our species at the dawn of the first age of Conscious Evolution.

Well evoke the power of the creative force of universal evolution within us, animating and activating it as never before. Youll learn to form Universal Human Pods small group structures that enjoin us and act as lightning rods for the divine.

In the evening, well utilize the Wheel of Co-creation as a contextual social symbol for the next stage of our evolution and a new form of social love and cocreate a sacred space to quicken our own evolutionary potential.

On Day 2, you will dive into an evolutionary approach to the fundamental problem facing humanity the exaggerated illusion of separation.

The problem facing humanity from the beginning has been an abnormal illusion that we are separate from Spirit, nature and each other.

Each of us has within ourselves a whole community of wounded, local selves that feel separate from Essence, acting as inner critics and goading to us toward improvement yet often upsetting us deeply and distracting us from our Essence.

Barbara will use her story of being dominated by her compulsive local selves and discovery her Essential Self to describe the nature of the Essential Self and the local selves.

Rather than abandon, medicate or expel the local selves, youll learn practices for healing them, releasing them from the excruciating pain of separation and uniting them with the Beloved.

Well engage in a sacred ceremony that will invite the Beloved to take dominion, as well learn how to form a Universal Human Pod, a revelatory way of sharing and speaking as Essence.

On the morning of Day 3, you will begin to embody your full potential self. Barbara will transmit the 52 Codes of Conscious Evolution in the voice of the Universal Self, also known as The Word, and invite you to do the same, making what was once spirit, flesh.

This aural alchemical process will create a resonant field to hold the highest frequencies of being for everyone present and that will extend to the larger, emerging Evolutionary Family.

In smaller pods, youll share one of the Codes and attempt to maintain the frequencies of deeper communion and communication as a steady state, a vital capability as you go forth in the world as a New Human.

In preparation for the afternoon, well explore the process of becoming a wholly integrated Universal Human, deepen our work in the Universal Pod and fuse with our Essential Selves.

According to the Story of Creation in the Christian tradition, On the 7th Day God rested.

On Day 4, we will act out a new ending to the Story of Creation on Earth, expressed in Barbaras inspired myth, 8th Day of Creation, when humanity woke up at the Tree of Life with the powers of gods.

During the reunion of the Cosmic Family, Lucifer goes home to God and The New Adam and the New Eve experience the Sacred Marriage at the Tree of life, reclaiming the Garden at the next stage of evolution.

The peoples of Earth are invited to place their gifts in the Book of life. A grand celebration occurs.

This is a call for actors in a new play to come forth upon the stage of history. In the afternoon, well participate in a dramatic reading of the Cosmic Family Reunion, with an inspired cast taking part in bringing alive this new ending for all of Creation.

On Day 5, you will experience you and your new Evolutionary Family already being born as a universal species into a universe of infinite intelligence and love.

Barbara Marx Hubbard is co-founder and chairperson of the Foundation for Conscious Evolution. An evolutionary educator, speaker and social innovator, she is the author of six books communicating the new worldview of conscious evolution, including the bestselling Birth 2012 and Beyond.

In 1945, when she was 15 years old, the first atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Share Guide: May I ask first off, about your organization, and what's going on there in Santa Barbara with the Foundation for Conscious Evolution? Barbara Marx Hubbard: The Foundation for Conscious Evolution has as it's purpose to bring a new world view, called 'Conscious Evolution,' into the global culture. Because we believe that it holds within it the most hopeful guidelines for a positive future of any world view now available. By Conscious Evolution we really mean that humans have gained the power of co-destruction and co-creation. By learning that we are actually responsible in some growing way for guiding the evolutionary process on this planet, means we have to learn a whole new set of skills, spiritually, socially and technologically. So we're bringing the new world view of Conscious Evolution into the global culture. The work we're doing in Santa Barbara, is very exciting and new. It started in October 1998, when I was doing a speech in Santa Barbara. After I did my talk on Conscious Evolution, I asked a question: "What would happen if this community were to experience it's own potential for Conscious Evolution?" Now I had never asked that question before. I said, "Would anybody here be interested?" And about 180 people put their names in a box. So then a group formed to bring me to Santa Barbara to do some kind of introductory teaching, which I did. And I said, "There are some things I think we need to know, to realize our full potential. First, we need to know our new story of creation, which is "cosmogenesis." The universe is, has been, is now evolving through us. And in that process of evolution, it has led to higher consciousness and greater freedom through more complex order. So we're placing ourselves as humans in the process of cosmogenesis. Also, we need to know that we--wherever we are in our personal lives, whether we're depressed or full of motivation--that the universe is in us, moving us. And it's my theory that there's a whole crop of people evolving into what might be called a "universal human."

Share Guide: Is this what you refer to in your book as "Cultural Creatives?" Barbara Marx Hubbard: It's more than that. It includes that, but it's deeper than that. Cultural Creatives are people changing their values towards a more planetary and global culture, and this is certainly part of it. But I'm seeing something deeper. I believe that there's an emerging species in humanity that has been pre-figured by the great avatars, Jesus, Buddha, and so forth. But that is becoming a new norm, as we expand in consciousness, expand in empathy, expand in connectedness, expand in creativity. I believe that we are, in a way, a transitional species, between the self-conscious homo sapiens, and what might eventually become a truly universal species. And by that I mean spiritually and physically. Because we're going to be moving outward; we are already working and living in space. By the third millennium, we'll be a solar system species, if we don't blow ourselves up. By the fourth millennium, we may well be galactic.

Share Guide: So the Cultural Creatives are a step along the way? Barbara Marx Hubbard: Exactly. But there's something of a deeper nature happening among the Cultural Creatives, and others, which I call "Emergence." I don't know if you've felt this yourself, Dennis, but it feels almost like a shift of identity, from the separated self-centered stage to a more unified stage. And in that shift of identity, there's a maturation of our consciousness, and our creative responsibility, that I think is the harbinger of what we may be 2,000 from now. We've had homo habilus, homo erectus, homo neanderthal, homo sapiensI think we're becoming homo universalis, a universal humanity.

If you add the capacity for unitive consciousness for self-healing, and even eventually regeneration, and the capacity for the information revolution, and the global brain, and the capacity to live and work in space, and so on, you begin to see radical new powers. I'm taking it spiritually, socially and technologically, putting it all together, and saying this is a quantum jump. We humans, who are living through this period of transition on the planet, are potentially an emerging new species.We need to know our own story of creation, and that we're part of it. And we need to know that we're an "emergent human," and that our growth potential literally has no limit. Part of this is that we need to learn co-creative relationships, and how to find our deep life purpose. The concept of finding vocation is part of the emergent species. Women are shifting from maximum procreation to co-creation, to an expansion of creativity. As we move into that kind of action, we seek to model the changes we'd like to see in the world by the way we create. So we don't just create more bureaucracies, and more competition and more violence. We want to go out and create what I call "Resonant Cores--connecting to the heart with one another. And then the last thing is, we need to develop processes for social synergy and co-creation. In Santa Barbara, we're learning all of this, and we're aiming at a community-wide synergistic event, with a local "Peace Room." The Peace Room is an idea I used when I was running for vice-president. Basically, it's a new social function that scans or maps and communicates what's emergent, what's working, what's innovative, what's already transforming the world.

Share Guide: Is there such a Peace Room now? And is it supposed to be the opposite of the war room? Barbara Marx Hubbard: No, there isn't one yet. But it is the opposite of the war room. We're designing it now in Santa Barbara, which has self-selected to be a prototype community, to see how this actually works. I've been carrying these ideas for many years, but what I realized, this last October when the community responded, is that it takes whole communities to ground the idea of this new world view. It's not just self-help. It's not just social action, it's a whole system transition. So, that's what we're doing here. Let's just say I have a vocation now to bring this into the world. But I have to develop a team. I can't do it alone. And as I develop a team, the way we relate to each other, the way we do the work that we're called to do, we want to have that way model the change. In other words, it's the famous saying, "Be the change you'd like to see." And we don't mean just personally. First of all, in small groups, and eventually in communities. If the community can be the change it wants to see, that's the most effective thing it can do.

Share Guide: Right, sort of the town meeting hall. The village center, which is lacking in suburbia frankly. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Totally lacking. I call these synergistic events, which are like town meetings in the round. Instead of having people voting on issues, we have people in circles by function, health, education, government, science, the arts, media, culture, saying what they want to create, and then matching needs and resources with each other to co-create at a community level. We are designing that type of event along with a peace room, which would be a way for people to track and map what's actually working. I think my most important insight, that moved me from San Rafael to Santa Barbara, was that it takes a community to consciously evolve.

Share Guide: To take it beyond your own household. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Yes. And a community is the appropriate size... You know, like Hillary Clinton said, "It takes a village to raise a child." It takes a community to bring forth the creative potential of it's people. And the way nature has worked for billions of years, is through separate parts joining together, to form a greater whole, through synergy. Synergy doesn't mean that everybody has to become the same, or do the same thing. It means everybody gets to do more of what they are uniquely creative in, by interacting with other people doing the same.

This is my hypothesis. I tested it out during the 70s, in the inner city of Los Angeles, and in the nation of Jamaica on the beaches, with people who didn't know how to read. Also in sophisticated places, like Washington D.C. When you create an environment that facilitates synergy and co-creation, it's totally natural, because people need each other to create. And we ask people three simple questions, in every sector of the wheel. "What is your current passion to create? Where is the juice for you?" Number two, "What's blocking you?" And, number three, "What resources do you have to share?" And when they respond to those three questions, even at a table of ten, there will be people who have something, a resource to match the need. Then the different sectors join together, and present this to an assembly of the whole. Let's say the health group says, "You know, here's what we want to create. Here's our needs, here's our resources." Another sector will say, "We have a resource to meet that need." And before you know it, the whole thing is synergizing. It's very exciting.

Share Guide: I would like to know ways that people can take action in our local area, county by county. Any tips or thoughts on how we can do some of these things you're suggesting in our area would be good. Barbara Marx Hubbard: We have a website, it's http://www.evolve.org. We'd like to have people check into that, because it's the beginning of the Peace Room. We ask people to put their projects into the peace room and then, as we develop that further, we will have instructions and guidance...how we're doing it, so that others can learn from us, and we can learn from them.

Share Guide: One thing that I've told my friends who were not entrepreneurs over the years, is when you've got a job, you're walking a course that's already laid out for you. In our case, we're kind of dreaming it up, as we go. So I understand you're in the creative mode, even while you're in the action mode. Barbara Marx Hubbard: We're discovering as we go, because we've attracted about 150 people to form a kind of team, who will be practicing the resonant cores, and studying conscious evolution. And then, moving out into the community to find the growing edge in every field, and bring people into synergistic events. So we're going to connect that which is emergent. Connect that which is innovative. And it's through the increased interaction of that which is already emergent, that you take the leap. This doesn't mean just a well known artist, and leaders&endash;it also means kids and older people, wherever they're at their creative edge. We want this to be very much grass-roots. Very open, with a wonderful diversity and mixture.

Share Guide: It sounds like a good way of going about getting people to do more than dream about it. Barbara Marx Hubbard: It does. Everybody gets to do more of what their passion is. That's why it works so well.

Share Guide: Are you familiar with something called, Green Plans, and Green Planning? Barbara Marx Hubbard: No.

Share Guide: It's basically something that's grown out of the Rio Summit, in the early 1990's. It's being adopted county by county, and state by state in our nation. But the leaders in the world are the Netherlands, and New Zealand, who've basically re-organized their government to deal with their environmental problems. It's the most inspiring thing I've seen. I will get some information to you, because the Netherlands is very polluted and over-crowded. So, they're creating the future model. They've had to take the bull by the horns, and create a nationwide 25 year clean-up plan. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Oh, I see, that's great.

Share Guide: Yes, and I want you to know that the July/August 1999 issue of Share Guide had an article by Marianne Williamson in it, and I know she and Neale Donald Walschhave an organization, American Renaissance Alliance. We're learning about more people who are not only writing books, and giving presentations, but creating websites and different ideas and ways of working together. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Right. Well, I'm a member of that Global Renaissance Alliance board. And I think what Marianne is doing so valuable, because she wants it to be an alliance. It's not just one person's work. And if I could put my finger on two things that I think are most needed in our movement, one is greater synergy among that which is already being created. And number two is more continuous outreach into the larger media. I would like it if we would become the news. There is a real disaster area, called the "news." The headlines in the newspapers... If you didn't know that anything was emerging on this planet, you would think we're going to hell, and we're already there.

Share Guide: Well, of course, that's a visualization that some people have, and they sell papers with it. Barbara Marx Hubbard: To some degree, there is hell going on, on this planet. But you know, I had a wonderful phrase occurred to me, and it sounds outrageous, but I'll tell you the phrase. "But it's springtime on the planet." What I mean by that, if you know how everything looks, let's say in February, or early March, you have nothing but dying things, and dead things. But right under it are shoots of green, but you can't quite see them. Then a couple of weeks later, the lawn is green, and the crocuses are out, and the daffodils are out. I think under the surface of the dying cultures, where we have the vast military build up, and the ethnic cleanings, and the inequities which are horrible&endash;everywhere there are green shoots of new ways of doing this, that are cooperative and loving. But they haven't shown up yet. So it's springtime on the planet, very early springtime.

Share Guide: Well, your 44 million cultural creatives, that's a big number. Barbara Marx Hubbard: It's a very big number, and that's just the beginning of it. If you looked all around the world, and you looked at all that's emerging, that's created, and loving, and leading to a more positive future, you'd find there's already an emerging culture. So, I think that the idea of the Peace Room, which is to scan for those initiatives, to map them, to connect them, and to communicate them, via all the media is the missing social function. The Peace Room is just a phrase I use to contrast the sophistication of the war room. Because the vision of the peace room really is as sophisticated as the war room. And, if you can imagine Dennis, people really scouting out in every field and function, what's working, and putting that into both the internet, and into smaller social gatherings, where people connect, you begin to see how to accelerate what's already happening.

Share Guide: Yes, to help the snowball grow. Barbara Marx Hubbard: The two things I think are missing are the linkages among that which is already emerging, and the consistent communication of it, not just as an isolated bit of good news, but as an emergent humanity. It has to have the dynamism of the emergence, of what has been longed for by the human species, which is it's own ability to connect with itself, with nature, and with spirit. And there are millions of people who are doing that now. I call these people a "new norm." We're not extraordinary spiritual geniuses. We are a whole crop of normal humans who are exhibiting some new characteristics.

Share Guide: Exactly. I was sort of a bored Catholic as a child, and then I wound up in the humanistic psychology department at Sonoma State University. Then I got turned on to Ram Dass, and seeing East and West, after living in ashrams, and recognizing I'm an American, I'm going to live here. I discovered the natural foods movement was really a pretty big movement, even though in the early 1970's it was just taking off. When I went to my first trade show, as a little local distributor, I saw that there were quite a few people like me, around the nation. It was really inspiring to find that I was part of a movement. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Yes, exactly.

Share Guide: And now, decades later, this is all bigger. Now we have the internet as an opportunity to link us up faster. After a decade in natural foods work, I got tired of flying around the nation doing trade shows. I decided to do this journalism thing. I was also disgusted with how the mundane news was so negetive. You know, it wasn't even 50% good news and 50% bad news. I was thinking that if they could at least show some good things that were happening, and some possibilities it would be good. Well, kind of out of frustration, Share Guide started. Barbara Marx Hubbard: See, it's so valuable what you're doing, really. All the smaller journals, and smaller radio stations and all, it's the building of that.

Share Guide: Right. Well by now, on our website, we're linked with over 200 holistic sites, that are either regional like us, or some of the big ones, like New Age Journal. Some are in other nations. One of my big goals now, and it'll be helping to spread the word about you too, is to get this information that I've been gathering out to the other positive media. Beause, many of them, like mine, are much more of a guide, a new age yellow pages, than really informative in-depth articles and interviews. So, I'm going to take this network and figure out to get this word out further through the network. The reason I wanted to interview you, more than anything, was this business of the social potential movement. In college, it was called human potential movement. It was just the phrase, and it just feels like your phrase is the next one. Barbara Marx Hubbard: I believe so. The reason we're having the social potential movement is because there was so much of a human potential movement. It moved us out from where we've been. All the values, and the personal growth. And, now those values are being taken, and applied, and social transformation is happening.

Share Guide: Sometimes you see all the problems happening in the world, and you just feel like sticking your head in a hole, and going to work, and watching TV, and leaving it at that, you know. But there are so many sprouts coming up, that people need to be re-inspired. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Well, that spring time on the planet, early springtime, is a really nice image. Think of all those little green shoots coming up out of the dying embers of the past.

Share Guide: You see people everyday who are completely asleep. But you see others who have an inkling, and would like to know more, and make a change. Those are the transitional people. Barbara Marx Hubbard: That's right. I have a metaphor for this, that we're undergoing a planetary birth. It took 15 billion years to get a planetary system that became aware of itself as a whole, that realized it had to stop over populating. That realized that women had to shift from maximum procreation to co-creation, which means finding life's purpose in meaningful creativity. Which relieves the men from having to take care of the huge families. Which starts the realization that we have to manage a whole planetary system. You know, we have to coordinate food, we have to understand to switch to renewable resources. We never had to do any of that before.

Share Guide: This is really a new paradigm. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Because of the crisis of birth. The species has got the evolutionary driver forcing us to learn how to co-evolve with nature or die. Now if we learn it, it means we're going to be universal. Because we will restore this earth, and we will bring the human environment into space. And we will, finally, probably, travel to the billions of galaxies.

Share Guide: Non-polluting energy sources are known already. We're just, you know, holding the patents down by the companies that are making the money. Barbara Marx Hubbard: We obviously have to shift the economic system. How do we create a planetary economic system that's just and sustainable, and allows for the new creativity at the same time? That's a very great challenge, we know that.

Share Guide: We need to have ethics as part of creating a corporate charter, as well as making money. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Well, I think eventually people will experience that community, and creativity, and reciprocity will supplant competition and commercialism. The reason for that is, ultimately it doesn't satisfy the human heart. Ultimately commercialized, individual, alienated society does not satisfy. People who've been through the materialistic phase of western culture, are already seeking something new.

Share Guide: That's right, we're beyond just wanting that. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Like, in China, you can't tell the Chinese, "Well, you shouldn't have a washing machine." Because, they want washing machines. But people who've had washing machines and cars...We may not want to give up our washing machines, but we know that more washing machines will not make a difference. We know that more cars will not make a difference. The most innovative people on earth are those that already have enough, and are moving into a new phase of social transformation, personal transformational, co-creation. I think that's the growing edge of evolution, wherever it's happening.

Share Guide: One key point about this Green Planning I mentioned, is that when people decide to pollute less, they ultimately find they're saving resources. And that they're more profitable. So it helps for the economy. Plus, the countries who are learning to clean up first, they're now on the cutting edge of technology. Other countries want to buy their technology. Barbara Marx Hubbard: Wonderful.

Discovering the Importance of the New Story

It was a cold November day in Paris in 1948 during my junior year abroad from Bryn Mawr College. Somehow I had separated myself from my classmates and wandered into Chez Rosalie, a small caf on the Left Bank. A wood fire was burning and the smell of Gauloises cigarettes filled the air.

I sat at one of the wooden tables and ordered my lunch. A tall, handsome young American man opened the door, letting in the cold. There was only one place left for him to sit, opposite me. I smiled at him, immediately attracted, and introduced myself. He told me his name was Earl Hubbard. He had such a special intensity that I decided to ask him questions that had dominated my thoughts ever since the United States dropped the atomic bombs on Japan three years earlier, when I was fifteen years old, in 1945. My horror had stimulated these questions: What is the meaning of our new scientific and technological powers that is good? What is the purpose of Western civilization? What are positive images of the future commensurate with these new powers?

In my quest for answers, I had read through philosophy, science fiction, and world religions. But amazingly, except for brief glimpses in science fiction and mystical revelation, I found none. The philosophers looked back toward a golden age, as the Greeks did; or were cyclical, as in Eastern thought; or were stoical, believing there was nothing new under the sun as the Roman philosopher Marcus Aurelius said; or were existentialist, like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, proclaiming that the universe has no inherent meaning except what we give it as individuals. Finally, I read the materialistic philosophers who proclaimed that the universe is nothing but matter and is inevitably degenerating to a heat death through increasing disorder or entropy as stars burn out, and with them all life will die. Although some visionaries and mystics foresaw a life beyond this life, beyond death, I found no positive visions of the future to work toward in this life.

With these questions I became a metaphysical seeker. My upbringing had been Jewish agnostic. I was a spiritual tabula rasa a blank slate with no religious beliefs. When I asked my father What religion are we? he answered, You are an American. Do your best! But at what? I wondered. My father was a Horatio Alger type, a poor boy from Brooklyn who had become the toy king of the world. He told his children that the purpose of life was to win, to make money. But I couldnt believe him. I knew that even if everyone had money, everyone would be as frustrated as I was, seeking the meaning of life but finding nothing. Material comfort alone could not be the goal of existence. I had grown up with so many toys that by the age of six, I knew that more toys would not make me, or anyone else, happier.
