Bhumi involved herself by building toilets and a hostel hereafter the blockbuster success and nationwide impact of her film, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. While shooting for Son Chiraiya in the Chambal Valley, Bhumi interacted with the children here and they also celebrated her birthday to express their love and gratitude for Bhumi. Bhumi has been constantly supporting the Ashram with funds and gifts to ensure that the kids have the best possible education and facilities. A source from the sets reveals, Bhumi had carefully made this plan with the Ashram authorities. She wanted to surprise the kids and ensured they didnt know where they were being taken to. They were so happy to see their didi Bhumi and all of them ran towards her and hugged her! What befalls them is based on the results of their own actions. There is no use blaming God for that. God is the dispenser of the results of ones karma; He is never partial.

As our actions, so the fruit. If we perform good deeds, we will be able to enjoy happiness. However, if our actions are bad, we will have to experience sorrow. This rule is the same for everyone. However, some people perform actions without the attitude, I am the doer. They surrender all their actions to God and perform their karma. Selfishness and ego will be relatively less in them. One day, when he was meeting visitors, a small child suddenly vomited on the floor. The stench was unbearable and some people covered their noses, while others walked around the mess. Some others commented on how unhygienic the ashram was and left the place. Some others told the Guru, Guru, a child has vomited there. It smells really bad there. You should tell someone to clean the floor. Hearing all this, the mahatma got up to clean the floor himself. But when he reached there, he saw a young boy clearing away the vomit. Although the place was filled with people, only the young boy had thought of doing this. All that the others did was to complain. The young boys selfless attitude of joyfully doing something good for others attracted the mahatma. He thought, If there were more people in this world with this boys attitude, this world would become a heaven.

Everyone was equal in the eyes of the mahatma. Nevertheless, he felt a special compassion towards this boy. The boys attitude made him a fitting vessel to receive the Gurus grace. Gods grace is also like this. God showers His grace on everyone all the time. If we dig a hole on the riverbank, water will flow into it. Similarly, Gods grace will flow into a heart that has the qualities of selflessness, compassion and virtue. God is impartial. He is beyond all differences, has equal vision and is unattached. We should purify our actions and attitude, and have firm faith in Gods will. If we have this, we will certainly receive Gods grace. We will be able to maintain peace and contentment in happiness as well as sorrow, in gain as well as loss, in success as well as failure.

God is beyond all differences - The New Indian Express

The culling of birds from the bird flu-infected zones continued on day two here on Wednesday.

The operation was carried out by 13 Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) from the Department of Animal Husbandry at Metagalli, B.M. Sri Nagar, Ambedkar Gnana Loka, Kumbarakoppal and Hebbal.

According to the office of the Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry, 989 birds had been culled in the operation on Wednesday. They include 464 chicken, 326 and 173 domestic birds, 20 pets and six turkeys found within the one kilometre radius of the bird flu epicentre.

The culled birds were buried deep in trenches dug up for the purpose as per the bird flu management protocols and later the areas disinfected as a precautionary measure.

In total, about 6,000 birds had been identified from the infected area for culling. Around 4,100 birds were culled on day one of the operation on Tuesday. The department may take another day or two to survey any leftover birds and cull them accordingly. The process of sanitising the infected area has begun.

The sale of chicken has been banned in a 10 km radius in the city until further notice.

Meanwhile, workers at the Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda Ashram on Wednesday sprayed disinfectants at the Shukha Vana or the bird park which houses parrots from the South American continent. The park has been closed for tourists since many days following the COVID-19 scare. The park had been sanitised as a precautionary measure in view of bird flu outbreak here.

Avian influenza: More birds culled on day two - The Hindu

As coronavirus panic grips the entire world, one man seems to be having the last laugh.

With more than 1,60,000 people being infected by Covid-19 across the world, countries are stressing on social distancing (steps taken to reduce the probability of contact between infected persons and others) as the only effective method of containing the viral pandemic.

One man claims to have already pioneered the technique. He is self-styled godman Nithyananda Paramasivam.

"Some Indian people had laughed and mocked me when I isolated myself by creating the new country as Kailasaa. Now, the whole world is talking about social distancing. Lord Paramasivam has saved us. Power of God," he said.

Nithyananda has been practising self-isolation for quite some time now. Not because of coronavirus but because he is a fugitive.

The self-styled godman fled India after being accused of rape, kidnapping and torture. He also has an Interpol Blue Corner Notice issued against him.

Taking things to the next level, he bought an island in Ecuador, set up his own nation and named it Kailasaa and became the prime minister of the island nation.

Earlier, video ads doing the rounds on social media claimed that Nithyananda can cure the coronavirus outbreak that has killed thousands around the world.

Nithyananda, whose main ashram is in Bidadi in Karnataka, and two of his disciples were booked on charges of kidnapping and keeping children in wrongful confinement at an ashram in Ahmedabad. The two disciples have been arrested.

The controversial godman had fled the country last year and the Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice to locate him.

COVID-19 has created a global crisis. We are not sure how the world and India will come out of it. The modern world faced a similar pandemic in late nineteenth century called the bubonic plague, which killed millions in the eastern part of the world mainly in India and China.

That pandemic also originated in China, in Yunnan province, and spread to many countries through the sea route. Medical facilities at the time were almost all but absent. Particularly in India, there were hardly any trained doctors in modern medicine.

That pandemic spread to all inhabited continents and reached India through the ports at Calcutta and Bombay. Later on, it spread to Pune and other towns and villages. One guess is that more deaths occurred in towns than in spread-out villages, where natural social isolation is already a factor. Several herding communities left urban and populated towns and established settlements in the forest and plain lands.

Though several medical practitioners must have played a role during the time one young doctor died while treating patients in the Poona region: Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phules adopted son Dr. Yashwantrao.

The doctor died alongside his adopted mother Savitribai while serving plague patients in a special clinic that they opened in 1896-97. According to historical texts, Dr. Yashwant Rao served patients of all castes and communities as a part of his father and mothers social reform movement. In those days, Brahmins were avoiding becoming doctors as the British had made it mandatory that medical partitioners treat patients of all castes, and many Brahmins were unwilling to touch Dalits and Shudras.

The Satyashodak movement launched by the Phules took up a massive campaign against human untouchability and superstitions. Since the couple had no children of their own, they adopted a boy the son of a brahmin widow, Kashibai. The name of Yashwantraos birth father is unknown.

It is said that having while after her husbands death, conservative Brahmins in the Poona area had wanted to kill his pregnant wife. It was the Satyashodak movement headed by Phule that saved her and took care of the mother and child at their ashram. The son was eventually adopted by the Phules in 1874.

Yashwantrao eventually became a doctor and was married to Radha in 1889, whose father was part of the social reform movement. An inter-caste marriage, it was performed with a simple garland exchange in defiance of being married traditionally by a Brahmin pandit. The priestly class took this marriage to a court also.

Jyotirao Phule died in 1890. After his death, Savitribai and her son continued to undertake social and medical services. One biographer of Savitribai writes:

Her (Savitribai) adopted son Yashwantrao served the people of his area as a doctor. When the worldwide Third Pandemic of the bubonic plague badly affected the area around Nallaspora, Maharastra in 1897, the courageous Savitribai and Yashwantrao opened a clinic at outskirts of Pune to treat the patients infected by the disease. She brought the patients to the clinic where her son treated them while she took care of them. In course of time, she contracted the disease while serving the patients and succumbed to it on March 10, 1897.

The tragedy did not end there. Dr. Yashwantrao died as well after contracting the disease. This episode of the bubonic plague ultimately led to more than 12 million deaths in India and China, with about 10 million killed in India alone.

India has evolved a lot since the days of Dr. Yashwantrao and Savitribai Phules sacrifice. We now have doctors of all castes and communities. Apart from Dr. Yashwantrao, another doctor to die in the line of duty was Dwarkanath Kotnis during Chinas hour of need in the late 1930s. Kotnis was one of the five Indian physicians dispatched to China to provide medical assistance during the second Sino-Japanese war in 1938.

It was on January 10, 1897, that Aldemar Haffkine, a bacteriologist who trained with Louis Pasteur at his institute in Paris, and who was based in Bombay, tested the vaccine on himself and created a vaccine in record time to combat the bubonic plague epidemic in Bombay and Poona regions. That vaccine saved millions in over subsequent years even though at that time, India superstition and illiteracy coupled with ignorance resulted in restricted use.

The Haffkine Institute is now a premier research and vaccine producing organisation in Bombay.

Today, coronavirus seems to pose a much bigger threat in a globalised world of air travel in closed air-conditioned aircrafts. Well-equipped hospitals and well-trained doctors and nurses with the courage to make sacrifices like Dr. Yashwantrao and Savitribai Phule alone can save the world and India. And while there is still no vaccine for this novel virus, there will hopefully be one soon.

With some among the ruling party spreading superstitions, we must take a page out of our own medical history of courage, sacrifice and suffering. India still has a long road ahead when it comes to social reform and this crisis is suited to push such reform.

So while there is misinformation about how cow urine and dung work work like a vaccination for coronavirus, people must depend only on tested science, medicines, laboratories, doctors and nurses.

India is a country of 1.3 billion people, among them many who believe in superstitions as part of a long heritage of illiteracy and ignorance. We now have the media, and even mobile networks, informing people about how to look after oneself from washing hands to not touching faces.

However, casteism and baba-ism will only contribute to loss of more life. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself accepted, the Kerala government has been handling the COVID-19 better with a belief in science and medicine. Other state governments must also make adequate preparations.

Brazilian jazz artiste Bianca Gismonti has an undeniable connection with Indian musical heritage; her father, the pioneering Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti has performed with the legendary Hari Prasad Chaurasia. She herself is an avid fan of Ustad Rashid Khan. On her first visit to India, Bianca performed at the Jaipur Jazz and Blues festival and made her way to Kolkata to perform at ICCR along with her band members, drummer Julio Falavigna and bass player Antonio Porto.

We are playing some original compositions, some of my fathers works, some Tom Jobim with lyrics, Bianca tells us a few minutes before her set. In a free-wheeling chat, the jazz pianist opens up about her trajectory, her soundscape and her undeniable desi connect.

How do you feel about the Indian listeners?

Its been so beautiful meeting them; I personally feel Indian people are like Brazilian people, they are so warm and happy and it makes you feel at home.

Contemporary jazz is really big here right now. Is that why you decided to come here?

Not exactly, Ive always loved India, so music was a great excuse really (laughs). And many people were not aware about Brazilian music and our jazz so its been great bringing it here

A lot depends on mixing it especially, because my family is from Lebanon, Italy and Brazil, so its a mix of influences which have come naturally to me.

Are you familiar with Indian music?

Yes! So Julio Falavigna, our drummer, whos also my husband has two Indian gurus, and I love listening to Hindustani music. My father used to play with Hariprasad Chaurasia, they have performed here as well. Also Rashid Khan, hes my favourite!

Did you plan to do something in the city? Maybe sample some food?

Im a vegan so I had actually planned to see and eat whatever I can! Today, we went to the Yogananda Ashram and the Ramakrishna Ashram as well.

How would you define your trios sound?

Its Brazilian jazz with many, many influences, from African music, folk beats, European music, its about the right mix.

How did the trio come together?

I started playing with Julio in 2011 we were a duo back then, then we started playing with Paolo, hes our Italian bass player. He has been Brazilian music for many, many years hes very used to the genre.

What are you planning next?

We are touring to Europe next, in Germany, Italy, Hungary, Portugal. After April Ill be back in Brazil, where we will finish up our new album and mix it in Hungary, at our label there. The album is called Gismonti VII, its my last name and it is an homage to my father. I also have a piano duo with whom Ill be recording a new album.

What does your playlist sound like...

I love my fathers music, then theres Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento. I also really like Keith Jarrett he plays really touching music, and I love Herbie Hancock. In Japan, I love this jazz composer called Hiromi.
