NEW DELHI At least six people have died during a standoff between police and a religious leader who is believed to be holed up inside his sprawling ashram in northern India along with thousands of devotees, some of whom are armed, police said Wednesday.
The Hindu guru, 63-year-old Sant Rampal, is wanted for questioning in a 2006 murder case, but has repeatedly ignored orders to appear in court.
Riot police tried to storm the ashram in Haryana state on Tuesday, but Rampal's followers, some of them using guns, rocks and batons, fought them off, authorities said. About 200 people were injured, including security forces.
On Wednesday, the guru's followers handed over to police the bodies of four women who apparently died inside the 12-acre complex, about 110 miles from New Delhi. Earlier in the day, a woman and an 18-month-old child died in a hospital after leaving the ashram.
The circumstances of the deaths were not clear. Autopsies were being conducted and police were investigating.
Gurus and Hindu holy men are immensely popular in India, with millions of followers. People often consult gurus before taking important personal decisions. But the enormous power wielded by the self-styled holy men has also led to several scandals in which they have been accused of exploiting devotees.
Shriniwas Vashisht, director-general of police in Haryana, said many of the thousands of people holed up with Rampal were being held against their will or were being used as human shields to prevent police action.
"They know that we will not allow innocent women and children to be caught in the crossfire and they are taking advantage of that," Vashisht said.

Debris is strewn around Rampal Maharaj's ashram. Police clashes with the guru's supporters as they tried to arrest him.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
New Delhi (CNN) -- Police on Wednesday arrested an Indian guru after clashing, sometimes violently, with his supporters over the last 10 days.
Also on Wednesday, his followers turned over six bodies that authorities believe died of illness.
The spiritual leader, Rampal Maharaj, was arrested by Indian police without resistance from his followers, said regional administrative commissioner M.L. Kaushik.
Police had surrounded the ashram and ordered its evacuation, cutting off the water and electricity, and warned they wouldn't leave until they had arrested Rampal.
His supporters clashed Tuesday with police officers who were trying to storm the sprawling ashram -- a kind of religious compound -- to take the guru into custody, according to Kaushik.
Tensions between police and the guru's supporters started some 10 days ago when the followers didn't let officers arrest him, the commissioner said. The situation began to escalate, culminating in the full-blown clashes.

Chandigarh/Barwala: Haryana Police finally arrested elusive self-styled godman Rampal Wednesday evening from his fortified Satlok Ashram near Barwala in Haryana. At least six people lost their lives in the stand-off as Rampal eluded the police, while many of his key aides and around 450 supporters were also arrested.
Rampal was Wednesday whisked away in an ambulance by police.
The deaths of five women and an infant occurred during a stand-off and violent clashes between the controversial sect leader's followers and the security forces.
Senior police officers and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and Haryana Police entered the ashram complex Wednesday evening and Rampal was arrested just after 9 p.m.
"We have arrested him. He is in our custody. He is being taken to hospital for medical examination," a senior police officer said outside the ashram.
"He will be produced in the relevant court tomorrow (Thursday)," he said.
Police sources said Rampal would be taken to Chandigarh after medical examination. He is likely to be presented in a court there Thursday.
There was not much resistance offered by Rampal's supporters and his private army when he was finally taken into custody after 9 p.m., a police officer told IANS.
Sources said Rampal's face was covered with a cloth when he was brought out from inside the ashram.
"The mission (to arrest) has been completed successfully," said Jawahar Yadav, officer on special duty (OSD) to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Evacuation was still at the Satlok ashram at Hisar in Haryana, on even as self-styled 'godman' Satpal was arrested by the police. Earlier in the day, the police had arrested his close aidePurshottam Das and haddetained between 250 and 450 devotees.
Meanwhile, the police has slapped sedition and other serious charges against him and several of his followers while ruling out any negotiations with him, a day after armed clashes took place.
Haryana Director General of Police S N Vashisht on Wednesday asserted that police will continue its operation till he is arrested for production before Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday in a contempt case.

There is no possibility of negotiations... There is not even any plan.. He is accused of serious crimes. My suggestion to him is that he should surrender before the law, Vashisht said while addressing a press conference in Chandigarh.
A large number of followers of godman Rampal, who had been holed up in hisashram for days, came out on Wednesday and narrated how they were virtually confined there along with thousands more who too were desperately wanting to leave the premises.
