Stirling Gunter participates in Aqua Fit, an aquatic group exercise class held at the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers pool in Kapolei. It is described as a class for everyone, especially for those with joint ailments or injuries. The exercises uses your body weight and water resistance.

Carla Meyers leads Aqua Fit.
A diverse group, young and old and of all sizes, assembled for the Aqua Fit class at the Kroc Center in Ewa Beach.
The class is a good fit for anyone suffering from joint ailments or injuries since water eases the impact of exercise. This can be especially important for overweight participants.
The class still provides good cardiovascular conditioning as well as flexibility and strength training using foam dumbbells.
We donned buoyancy belts to keep us afloat as we ventured into the deep end. For a gentle warmup, we started with a light jog around the pool and movement in the water to get the blood pumping. The belt felt like a corset since it needed to be extra tight so it wouldn't ride up during the exercises.
About halfway through the class, we were each provided with a pair of foam "weights." Although they are nearly weightless out of the water, once they are submerged they provide a great deal of resistance.

NARINGAL aerobics export Brenton Andreoli has claimed two bronze medals at the world championships.
Andreoli won medals in the mens solo and open trios sections at the Federation of International Sports and Fitness (FISAF) titles in Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
Warrnambool-based EKB Fitness and Aerobics Accelerate team placed seventh in the final of its junior fitness category.
EKB coach Emma Bellman, former Warrnambool athlete Kayla Bamford and Sheppartons Emma OKeeffe earned sixth in the open trios category.
The Warrnambool and district athletes were yesterday coming down from a bumper week at the world championships in Europe.
Bellman yesterday spoke to The Standard from a Dordrecht hotel at 4.10am local time still celebrating the results.
She said the eight-member Accelerate team, which had a racing-themed routine, produced its best performance of the week in the finals.
The team was eighth after the preliminary round and moved up to seventh after the semi-final to qualify for the final.
In the prelims the nerves really showed, you could see it, whereas in the finals with fitness its important to show off as soon as you walk on the stage, show youre number one, she said.

IN GOOD HANDS: Stella (right) leads her aerobic dance class at Solid Gym.
SIBU: Aerobic dancing has remained popular as an exercise to get the heart pumping since it was introduced here over two decades ago.
It is still relevant as a cardiac exercise if the response to the new aerobic class at Solid Gym in Tapang Timur Road here is any indication.
Close to 25 women members of the gym joined the inaugural class on Oct 16.
The number soared to 30 when the subsequent class was held on Oct 18.
Gym owner Lau Kah Yii said gym members of the fairer sex had `demanded for an aerobic class, arguing that most equipment at the gym suited their masculine counterparts.
The perceptible inequalities in the equipment available at my gym had caused dissatisfaction among women members, Lau told The Borneo Post in a recent interview.
GETTING FIT: Students at the inaugural aerobic class at Solid Gym get their first feel of the `good for heart exercise.
He said: Its true. Most equipment is meant for building muscles, though there is no lack of equipment for cardiac exercises like the treadmill.

RETIRING from aerobic gymnastics four years ago with a world title, Kira Trevarrow never dreamt of again representing Australia.
But that's precisely what the Modbury Heights woman, 29, is about to do.
Trevarrow is coach and member of a northeast women's team representing her country at the Sport Aerobic World Championships inthe Netherlandsthis week.
"I've been coaching ever since I retired in 2008 and I came back to competing as a bit of fun," Trevarrow says.
"We (the team) ended up with some good results and thought we should keep going.
"The teams we'll be competing against at the championships do this as their fulltime job and we do it as a hobby, so for us even to be in the same league as them is brilliant."
Sports aerobics involves high intensity routines to music demonstrating flexibility, strength and continous movement.
Co-coach Emily Sharp, of Redwood Park, is also stepping out of retirement to compete at the championships which run until October 20.
"I've been itching to come back to the sport and obviously we're aiming high and would love to come back with a medal," Sharp, 28, says.

BODIES OF WORK: Fitness makes life ‘better and better’

Limited by the mores of the times, Sandra Ryan was a cheerleader in high school. She hasnt been on the sidelines since.
Ryan, 63, has been an instructor in aerobics, low-impact aerobics, stepping, sliding and now yoga. She ran, she biked. In the summer, she swims across the lake in front of her house.
Age is age; it doesnt bother me," says Ryan, who has always" been fit.
When I had my children, I was going to the YMCA, and I took fitness instructing there and I started teaching. It was just when aerobics classes were coming into style. The Y was the place to be in those days. It was just packed."
Later, while working at Dalplex in Halifax as a fitness co-ordinator, Ryan began practising yoga.
It was becoming popular and Madonna was doing it as well, which was a big thing with students, and yoga just took off. When you get into yoga, you think its physical, but it has a 5,000-year history to it and theres much more to it.
Theres eight limbs of yoga, and the eighth limb is enlightenment, where you just let go of your outer self thats worried about things and to-do lists and deadlines and stress. Thats what I like to see happen in a class."
Ryan teaches five or six times a week, which gives her a bit of a workout. She also practises at home. It is a less jarring way to stay fit than what she used to do.
My idea of a good time was to teach a high-impact aerobics class and then go for a run. Or, when I was at Daplex, Id teach and then go for a run on my lunch hour. That kind of went by the wayside as my knees got older.
Toward my 50s, my back started curving; thered always been a slight curve. Like anybody, theres little aches and pains, but whats so good about fitness is that you can kind of sail through them. Theyre not a big deal.

Weight problems? Try the water gyms

Water exercises offer all the benefits of dry gyms, without the impact, and are especially beneficial for those with weighty issues.
A WATER gym?
Yes, all our equipment is inside the water ... treadmills and all, David Gan nods.
Ive heard of aqua aerobics classes and water workouts but a water gym was something new. Together with two colleagues former competitive swimmer Tan Shiow Chin and fitness enthusiast Fiona Ho I trot off to try a session at the recently opened Water Aerobic Gym in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
A smiling Gan and Khoo Chun-Yi, both sports science graduates, personal trainers and supervisors at the gym, greet us. The place is small, with two pools (one freshwater and the other sanitised by a saltwater chlorination system) and, yes, the fitness equipment were in the pool.
These rust-free contraptions, all imported from Italy, include a hydro bike, treadmills and a moon walker. There are also floatation restraints like the hand paddles, water dumbbells, noodles, kayak paddles and a range of other items.
A former engineer and a keen water sports enthusiast, proprietor Gary Chua decided to start the water gym in April this year. He owns an above-ground pool business and decided to venture into the water gym business as an extension of the pool business. He reckons there is a market for it.
There isnt a fully-equipped water gym in this region but its growing in popularity in western countries, claims Chua, 49. Its also a good way to promote the usefulness of a home-sized pool (6m-9m) that has limited swimming capacity.
Water helps lessen the impact on the joints but gives you the same benefits of a dry workout, and is suitable for pregnant and elderly people. And you dont need to know how to swim.
The first recorded history of water workouts dates back to the early 1980s when American runners, who suffered bone, muscle and joint problems as a result of too much pounding on the pavement, were introduced to water workouts. Using a buoyant belt to hold their bodies in proper alignment, they would run in the pool as a form of training.
