COCONUT CREEK (CBSMiami) For anyone recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery as well as back pain, physical therapyis as close as your neighborhood pool.
CBS4 Meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez discovered a group of retirees in Coconut Creek who keep moving in order to stay fit and healthy, plus theyre happily recovering from painful conditions at their community pool with regular water aerobics classes.
Finding a suitable fitness routine once you reach the golden years can be a challenge, but for Patty Snyder and her class, there is no excuse when it comes to staying healthy.
I usually say my formula for the day is combine the air temperature and the water temperature, and if its over 150 degrees, were having a class!
CBS4 met Patty, a volunteer water aerobics instructor and her group through our Moving U Campaign. Many members of the group have overcome health obstacles and now use water aerobics as a way to keep themselves moving every morning at the Township Aquatic Center.
Ive had double knee replacements and this was the best exercise and a couple of other ladies have had knees replaced, hips replaced, we have had cancer survivors, they all say its the best way to exercise, explained Patty.
Patty is a retired high school math teacher who began the class as a student. When the previous teacher couldnt continue, Patty jumped in.
I guess the teacher in me just came through because I didnt mind calling the exercises, we tried giving me a day off on Wednesdays and calling it wacky Wednesdays where they each had to name one of the exercises, but I found some werent coming on Wednesdays because they were afraid to call it, explained Patty. So I said okay Ill take it over again. And I did give them homework, they had to go on the computer and find exercises.
Holly Rose is also a volunteer water aerobics instructor who has been teaching for over 20 years. She is recovering from a hip replacement surgery and said deep water aerobics is an important part of her physical therapy.
I feel normal in the water, I do. You keep your aerobic rate up, youre steady on your feet, its a wonderful exercise. You dont sweat like land, land hurts sometimes. Water doesnt hurt; its good for every part of us.
Patty and Holly participate in daily classes, weather permitting, from 9:00-10:00am at the Township Aquatic Center in Coconut Creek.

City refinances Yacht Club, approves water aerobics classes Port … – Port isabel south padre

ByDINA ARVALOPort Isabel-South Padre Press editor@portisabelsouthpadre.com
During a special meeting of the city commission Wednesday, the City of Port Isabel unanimously approved the re-funding of a loan on the Yacht Club, the formation of a water aerobics class at the community pool and passed several resolutions opposing proposed state legislation.
First up was a re-funding of a variable interest Texas Leverage Loan on the historic Port Isabel Yacht Club. Its been going up it was two-point-something (percent interest) when they first got the loan, its up to 4 percent now, City Manager Jared Hockema explained to the commission.
As such, the Economic Development Corporation (EDC ) hired a financial adviser to explore refinancing options and were able to secure a lower interest loan at a fixed rate. They have been able to secure a purchaser at a 3 percent fixed rate, so its a savings, of course, from what were paying right now, Hockema said. The lower interest rate would generate a savings of more than $100,000 over the life of the loan, he said.
In other news, a suggestion from a resident ultimately spurred the Commission to approve the offering of water aerobics classes at the Citys public pool.

Aerobics picking up in Thimphu – Kuensel, Buhutan’s National Newspaper

A social fitness programme was conducted for the monks of Tango monastery on April 8.
The programme was initially started by the Ministry of Health to promote the importance of physical activity at the work place and to reduce non communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, among others.
The aerobic session is included in the programme. Aerobics is a physical exercise that includes rhythmicaerobicexercises with stretching and strength training routines. Besides boosting the immune system, it also helps in regulating blood pressure and cholesterol. A dietary plan is provided to the participants apart from the exercise.
Fitness trainer, Dorji Tsheten of Dosten Consultancy Service, said that it was observed that the monks do not get much physical activity in their daily lives and so he approached the principal of the monastery to talk about the health benefits of aerobics.
The programme is currently being conducted at the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement, an Anim Dratsang, Gidakom hospital and the Anti Corruption Commission.
Due to the lack of funds, the programme is being carried out mostly in Thimphu. Dorji Tsheten said that he is interested to introduce such social fitness programmes in all the 20 dzongkhags in the future.

Students to compete in first schools aerobics competition – Antigua Observer
Posted: at 7:40 am
Students from a number of secondary schools across Antigua will compete in the first schools aerobics competition slated for the JSC Sports Complex today.
The event, slated to start at 2:30 pm, is the brainchild of physical education teacher and sports enthusiast, Kelesha Antoine, who said the aim is to create an environment where such activities are the norm.
What we are trying to do is foster that whole physical activity within our students. Medical Benefits speaks about the prevention of the non-communicable diseases so the union has partnered to have this competition annually so in that way the schools themselves will prepare their participants for a yearly competition, she said.
Antoine, who is also president of the Antigua & Barbuda Fencing Federation, explained how the competition would work.
We are going to have 30 minutes of straight warm-ups during which no one can tap out. After the 30 minutes of warm-up participants get a break for water and so on and then the intensity goes up. When the intensity goes up and we see that the athletes and students cannot continue with the routine then we will pull them out. There will be some judges in the activity pulling out [participants] because they may not be able to continue because of breathing issues and many other issues, she said.
The initiative is supported by the Antigua & Barbuda Union of Teachers (ABUT) and 2nd Vice President Tessa Roberts said it falls in line with the Unions mandate of creating well-rounded students.
We were asked by Antoine to partner with her concerning this aerobics competition and the union is very pleased to be associated with any effort that is going to encourage physical wellness. We are well into our
mandate to develop the whole person and to also develop sports in Antigua so we are very willing to partner with Antoine in this event, Roberts said.
Over 50 students are expected to take part in the competition. Admission to the event is free.

Glastonbury Festival has been compared to an aerobics class as fans slammed the announcement that Katy Perry and Stormzy will perform.
The musical pair will share a stage with the likes of Radiohead and Foo Fighters at the Worthy Farm event in June.
They were unveiled as two of the 88 acts set to play the iconic festival including Clean Bandit, The XX, Alt J, Barry Gibb, Biffy Clyro and Solange Knowles.
But some took aim at the decision to book Perry and the London-born grime artist for what some claimed is a rock event.
Critical: Some Glastonbury-goers are up-in-arms about Katy Perry (Mario Anzuoni/Reuters)
One angry fan tweeted: Katy Perry and Stormzy. What the f*** is @GlastoFest these days? What a load of s****.
Another posted: Stormzy n Katy Perry at Glastonbury. ...f****** hell.
Others defended the decision with one posting: Lets face it @katyperry is going to SLAY Worthy farm. Glasto will be big fun this year. Good lineup there #Glastonbury2017 #Glastonbury.
Another wrote: Glastonbury lineup is rubbish except Katy and Stormzy.
The line-up was unveiled by organiser Emily Eavis, daughter of founder Michael Eavis.
Sharing a poster on Twitter she wrote: Here are the first few names of this year's wonderful line up! Even more will be with you soon...
Other names include Lorde,Chic, Major Lazer, Haim, Goldfrapp, Rag 'N' Bone Man, Toots and the Maytals and The Jacksons who will be making their Glastonbury debut.

Fast Track to Fat Loss – 9NEWS.com

DENVER, CO - Optimum Wellness Presented by King Soopers
When it comes to blasting away fat, aerobic exercise is the way to go. Now, that may seem contrary to popular opinion. These days we hear all about weight and/or resistance training and the numerous boot-camp style workouts. And while truly almost any exercise is good for the body and soul, when it comes specifically to fat loss, cardiovascular exercise is the most effective. That doesnt mean we dont need BOTH!
Remember, LEAN MUSCLE helps burn fat as well. We build lean muscle through resistance work and strength those exercises that trigger muscles to work against an external challenge with the expectancy of building lean muscle and increasing strength. This type of exercise will help build efficient metabolism and it is important for the health of our bones (osteoporosis prevention).
In 2012, a study performed by Duke University was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. This wasnt a huge study by any stretch by the end of the study, results were compiled from just 119 study participants. Still the results provide interesting information when it comes to the question of which is better aerobics or resistance training? The study participants were assigned to one of three groups: aerobic training, aerobics plus resistance training or just resistance training. Those in the aerobic training and aerobic plus resistance training groups lost more weight compared to those who just participated in resistance training. The resistance training group actually gained weight (due to an increase in lean body mass i.e. muscle mass). The aerobic exercisers averaged around 2 hours per week engaging in aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise.
How do you know which type of exercise is best for you? Always talk to your primary care provider if you are unsure where to start. Ask to have your percent body fat measured. If it is above 30% then fat loss is a great place to start get that heart pumping with aerobic exercise! Weight bearing exercise is also important because it will help prevent osteoporosis (weak bones). Interval (quick bursts of higher-intensity activity followed by lower intensity activity) walking will cover both fitness goals (fat loss and bone health). Think hills, sprints, fast walking (for one minute) followed by a leisurely pace (for one to two minutes). Aim for at least 20 to 30 minutes each session or break it into twice daily 15 minute sessions. Take at least 5 minutes to cool down and stretch your muscles after each workout. And for a special treat, consider an Epsom salt bath with a few drops of lavender essential oil following your workout.

Water aerobics class features Miss Savannah State University candidate Cairo Cumberlander The Tiger's Roar |
Miss Savannah State University candidate Antonia Green held an event on Wednesday that was a little out of the ordinary for a queen candidate.
Green paired up with the weekly water aerobics instructor in Wiley-Wilcox. Her goal was to give a different option for students who want to work out besides the traditional way.
Mission Fitness is Greens platform running for Miss Savannah State and she wants to spread awareness to all students about staying fit physically, mentally, and educationally.
Green said, The idea with teaming up to do this water aerobics class was to help the physical stand point of a student but some of the exercising we were doing actual helped with the mental area as well and I wasnt expecting that.
Green wants to encourage all students to work on themselves physically but also mentally as well while being a college student.

My View: It’s good to jump out of your comfort zone – Buffalo News

By Joyce Hodgson
We are our own worst critics. I know I judge myself harshly; picking on my faults and failures. Thinking I am never good enough, thin enough, smart enough, tough enough. Some days I really believe those words.
Im in training to hike the Appalachian Trail and no matter how much I train for it, I feel like it wont really happen. Something will stop me.
One obstacle that could prevent me from hiking the trail is my physical condition. Ive read stories about how some hikers never hiked a day in their life before completing the trail. Ive also read about middle-aged women hiking the trail and breaking a leg! So, to err on the side of caution, I decided to jump out of my comfort zone and join some exercise classes.
I dont exercise. Ill happily hike and walk outside all day. Joining an exercise class with a teacher in the front and strangers all around me while my fat bounces up and down is not what I would sign up for, but I did.
Our town has a community education program that offers a 20/20/20 class 20 minutes of aerobics, 20 minutes of weight training and 20 minutes of stretching and a yoga class.
Well, I missed the first 20/20/20 class because I had to go to the dentist. I was glad to go to the dentist because then I didnt have to exercise!
However, there was no dentist appointment or other good excuse for me to miss yoga class the next night.
So imagine my delighted surprise when I arrived and tried to open the doors at the school and found they were locked. I tried a side door. Also locked. Secretly, I was rejoicing that I could go home. But as I was walking back to my car, I heard a woman tell me that the door was now open. I guess I was going to yoga.
My self-criticism kicked into high gear. My clothes werent yoga clothes, my mat was too thin and I was too fat to bend the way I thought I should.
Then the instructor told us to breathe, so I did. I no longer thought about my T-shirt exposing my fat stomach. I doubled up my mat when my knees hurt and I just bent over as far as my body would let me.
Yoga is so peaceful. After class, I knew that practicing yoga would increase my flexibility, stamina and balance, all things I will need when hiking the Appalachian Trail.
The second week approached and yes, I admit it here, I actually called the woman running the program asking how I could get out of the 20/20/20 class.
She offered different locations and days, but advised me to go since my insurance covered the cost. So I went.
As the instructor began explaining the aerobic steps, I was swearing in my head. I was telling myself that I hate aerobics, I hate dancing, I hate the music shes playing and I hate the lighting in the gym. I was tired, hungry and getting a headache.
Then, to my surprise, I did it. I was doing aerobics, and dancing to the music I hated under bright lights with energy I didnt know I had while suffering from hunger and a headache.
Was I comfortable at the classes? Heck, no. My comfort zone was two time zones away!
As the class progressed, I laughed at myself when I was facing front instead of facing back and raising my left leg instead of my right leg. I made up my own steps instead of doing a step ball change. I was learning.
But learning to not be so hard on myself is tough. I doubt Ill ever succeed at that.
Joyce Hodgson lives in Alden with her husband and two golden retrievers. She intends to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2020.
