A 55-year-old woman died after she was hit by a speeding car being driven by a nurse at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), near Ramakrishna Ashram in Central Delhi on Tuesday.

According to police, the accident occurred near the Palika Kendra pavement opposite the Ramakrishna Ashram around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The victim, later identified as Geeta (55), was hit by a speeding white Maruti Alto that was heading towards Pusa Road.

A large crowd gathered at the spot and the Alto was soon after intercepted near the traffic signal at the junction beneath the Ramakrishna Ashram Marg Metro station. Meanwhile, a call was made to the Police Control Room and police reached the spot immediately.

The victim was rushed to the Lady Hardinge Medical College, where she was declared brought dead , said a police official.

He further said the white Alto was being driven by a woman, Asha Yadav (26), a nurse at the AIIMS.

It was not a case of red-light jumping because the car was yet to reach the traffic signal beneath the Metro station concourse. But it was surely moving at a very high speed. The road is quite free in the afternoon and it seems like the nurse lost control over the vehicle and hit the victim, the official said.

Asha Yadav was arrested immediately after being booked under relevant sections of the IPC, but was released on bail.

However, her impounded vehicle wasnt released till Wednesday evening, the official added.

The victim, Geeta, was a resident of Paharganj where she was living with her husband and three children.
