PM Modi said Mahatma Gandhi's thoughts have the power to mitigate the challenges the world is facing today and he urged all to make cleanliness a habit, since that would be a tribute to Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019.

On the first day of his Gujarat tour when PM Modi arrived in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Ashram not only did he revisit Bapu's memories he also spun his charkha. Apart from this, the PM released a commemorative postage stamp and coin on Shrimad Rajchandra, the spiritual guru of Gandhiji.

Celebrating the centenary of the establishment of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad PM Modi first visited the Sabarmati Ashram and planted a sapling. After this, he paid floral tributes and unveiled a statue of Gandhiji.

PM Modi viewed various memorabilia associated with Mahatma Gandhi in the ashram while ashram residents informed him in detail about the many objects in the institute and their significance. After this when he arrived near the charka kept there he spun cotton yarn.

The PM also visited the museum in Sabarmati Ashram and wrote his thoughts in the visitor's book. After this, he released commemorative postage stamps and coins on Shrimad Rajchandra, Bapu's spiritual mentor.

He said that no personality of the world could influence Gandhiji, except for Shri Rajchandra ji. Describing his guru as a great man, the PM said that his memory should be preserved for generations.

The Prime Minister also said that if we had instituted Gandhiji as a messiah of peace in the world then the UN Secretary-General would have been inspired by a visit to Sabarmati. PM Modi said that Bapu's ideas still have the potential to mitigate the challenges faced by the world.

The PM also discussed Bapu's Bhajan Vaishnav Jan Ko and said that there is so much strength in it that you will know where you have to go, what to do. PM Modi appealed to people to come to Sabarmati Ashram.
