Recreation offering more aerobics, Zumba classes

WAYNESBURG After successful first sessions earlier this spring, the Greene County Department of Recreation will offer additional six-week sessions of the fitness programs aerobics and Zumba.

Aerobics classes will run from 6 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday from May 1 through June 5, and Zumba classes will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. every Thursday from May 2 through June 6. Classes will be held in the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg.

Individual classes can be attended at a cost of $8 per class. Anyone wishing to attend all six weeks of a session, however, can pre-register at a discounted rate of $5 per class, for a total of $30 per session. The early registration deadlines are Tuesday, April 30, for aerobics and Wednesday, May 1, for Zumba.

Instructor Shastina Humble will lead both series of classes. Attendees should wear sweat-absorbing clothes and good support shoes, such as cross-training or dance shoes, and bring water and towels.

The Department of Recreation is also offering morning classes in Zumba with instructor Melissa Frameli. Starting Monday, April 29, Zumba classes will be offered from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through May 24. The class scheduled for Friday, May 17 will be held Thursday, May 16. Classes will be held in the 4-H Building.

Individual classes can be attended at a cost of $8 per class. Anyone wishing to attend all 12 classes, however, can pre-register at a discounted rate of $5 per class, for a total of $60. The early registration deadline is Friday, April 26.

The aerobics classes are designed for both high- and low-impact workouts. Aerobic exercise conditions the heart and lungs; other benefits include increased energy and stamina, toned muscles, decreased tension and improved mood.

The fitness program Zumba combines hip-hop music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves. Benefits of Zumba include efficient calorie-burning, muscle toning and cardiovascular improvement. Zumba is recognized by leading fitness organizations, including the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America, the American Council on Exercise and Can-Fit-Pro, a Canadian fitness education organization.
