Lori Manship leads a water aerobics class at the YWCA on Friday. The YWCA is launching a new line of water aerobics classes specifically designed for breast cancer survivors.

Starting Wednesday, June 5, the YWCA pool will launch a line of water aerobics classes for breast cancer survivors with an added perk all classes are completely free. Survivors won't even have to worry about the pool membership fee.

It's all covered under a $15,000 grant courtesy of the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation.

The program is called Fluid Recovery, presented by the YWCA and the Pretty in Pink Foundation and taught by certified healing fitness instructor Lori Manship.

I'm really excited about it. It's a whole body workout concentrating heavily on those targeted areas the chest, shoulders, back to really help these women after their treatments, said Manship.

Manship approached Lance Tate, YWCA aquatics director, about starting the program after working with a number of breast cancer survivors in the water and seeing the results.

Both deep and shallow water Fluid Recovery classes will be offered three to four times a week for a full year. The grant pays for all equipment, instruction and fees.

The YWCA is giving us the facility, the Cape Fear Foundation gave us the money and at Pretty in Pink, we have the connection with the survivors, said Joy Wade, Pretty in Pink Foundation program manager. When you have all the nonprofits working together, this is what can happen.

Breast cancer survivor Robin Glover started taking breast cancer-geared water aerobics with Manship at the YWCA after her radiation treatments. She's registered for the upcoming Fluid Recovery program.

If I hadn't started doing this, my shoulder would probably be what they call locked up,' said Glover, who experienced side effects from radiation.
