Swedish furniture giant Ikea will now serve vegan meatballs at its stores in US and Europe, expanding its popular Swedish meatballs range.

The new balls dubbed, 'grnsaksbullar' will be served in plates of 10 balls and would be sold at 3.80 or $4.49, though the price has not been confirmed yet.

The vegan meatballs are made with chickpeas, carrots, green peas, red pepper, corn, kale, pea protein, onion, rapeseed oil, salt and seasoning. They contain vegetable chunks.

The vegan balls are available in select stores currently and will soon be rolled out to all the stores internationally. Ikea, though, will continue to sell its Swedish meatballs.

Ikea reportedly sells 150 million Swedish-style meatballs, made from beef and pork, in its cafes each year. This is another step in the retailer's attempts to go green.

In a statement as cited in The Telegraph, the company said: "The veggie ball... has a lower environmental impact, such as a lower carbon footprint.

"This is a natural step for Ikea, building on the vision of creating a better everyday life for the many."
