Ernestine Griffith, 90, says she's not big on exercise.

But I like this, said Griffith, motioning to a VHS tape titled Rise Up with Rosie.

The Sharpsburg Towers resident gathers in the hi-rise lobby at least twice a week to stretch, sway and shake with friends.

The video is led by senior citizen Rose Metter, who demonstrates chair-based exercises for senior citizens. Carol Huff of Aspinwall initiated the program for Towers residents.

I started coming down about 10 years ago, Huff said. Really, for no other reason than I decided it would be nice for the people who live here.

Every week for the past decade, she greets a small crowd of residents who come to stomp their feet and wave their arms to the Polka-like music blasting from the television.

We've tried other exercise tapes, Huff said, laughing. But they really, really like this one the best. They can do all the moves from memory.

Rise Up with Rosie was produced in 1993 by New Jersey-based Golden Rose Productions, touting exercises specially designed to stretch and tone your body and make you happy to be alive.

Betty Phelan, 90, agrees with that description.

Phelan rarely misses a class. She encourages friends to meet an additional two or three times each week and perform the tape without Huff's guidance.
