Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville on How to Start Meditating

Meditation is recommended by nearly every medical professional when it comes to calming anxiety, an affliction that effects millions of Americans, especially now with so many having quarantine fatigue thanks to the extended nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But if you havent meditated, you may not know where to start. Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Sayville has this guide to help newbies become seasoned meditation pros!

What is Meditation?

There are countless ways to meditate, but what is it exactly? Most define it as a way to achieve mindfulness, which is focusing on the present moment. Experts say if you check in with your mind at any point during the day, youre likely to be thinking about something in the past or in the futureand then needless emotions that are the root of anxiety are likely to follow, which includes planning, obsessing, worrying, and catastrophizing. Mindfulness helps pull the mind away from those thoughts and into the present.

One expert likened mindfulness to the feeling that you have when you get lost in a hobby that you enjoy. It may not be traditional meditating, but its another way of achieving mindfulness.

How Do You Meditate?

This is another question that would yield you a different answer depending on who you asked. Many think that it requires a lot of time and that you must be sitting a certain way (your mind is probably picturing someone sitting cross-legged!), but thats not the case. You can meditate in a position thats comfortable for you sitting, lying down, etc. The key is to be in a quiet place where you can focus on your breath and body movements.

One easy way to start is by taking a full breath in through your nose by using your diaphragm (which means that your stomach will rise as you inhale). Hold it for three seconds, then slowly exhale through your mouth (and your stomach will return to the original starting position). Focus on the consistency of your breaths, your stomach moving up and down, or any other fixed point to relax your mind. If you can do that, youll remain in the present and achieve mindfulness.

If you do that for around four or five minutes for two to three times a day, youre off to a great start on your meditation journey!
