GWEN WADWELL (ex-Eston Hospital Nurse) 1915-2013
GWEN WADWELL was born Gwen Watson at Bolckow Terrace, Grangetown in 1913. Her father was a steelworks foreman who won many trophies for sprinting in regional athletics despite losing an arm between the buffers of two rail trucks, At 18, Gwen left home for Eston Hospital to start nursing. She tended to many miners brought in from the Eston mines as well as steelworkers brought from Grangetown. She married Edwin Brooks in her 20s but the couple never had children. During World War Two, she became an ambulance driver for Air Raid Protection (ARP) and later Dorman Long. In 1961, she returned to nursing until retirement in 1975. Many years after Edwin #39;s passing, she met John Wadwell at an Eston Institute tea dance and they married, both in their mid 70s. Gwen spent 8 years with John before he died in 1999. In March 2000, at the age of 84, Gwen was interviewed for the film #39;A Century in Stone #39; (released 2004). Film-maker Craig Hornby said "Finding such a fantastic, charismatic character as Gwen was a massive boost to the project. It is impossible to imagine the film without her. I remember at the Premiere watching her in the front row watching herself on screen and mouthing all her clips word for word with a big grin on her face. I kept in touch with her over the years, We got on famously, she was intelligent and funny, a great spirit"
