While much has been done over the last 20 years to alleviate hunger, approximately one half of the world #39;s population still lives in poverty. Over one billion people are trapped in what has become termed, "extreme poverty", a life of absolute desperation, with no hope of breaking free. Illiterate and unskilled, employment is a luxury that few enjoy. Landless, without possessions, few qualify for legitimate loans for establishing themselves in small enterprises of self-employment. Without access to clean water or an understanding of health and sanitation, millions die each year from preventable disease. Without representation, or a voice, these are the forgotten people of our world. And yet, they are not totally alone.
